Celebrity impersonator and vocalist Sharon Owens takes the stage as the beloved Barbra Streisand for this concert with the Coastal Cities Jazz Band. Owens discovered her Streisand sound in the early '90s and has been touring the world performing her critically acclaimed tribute ever since. Featuring a number of professional musicians who performed with the top big bands of the '40s and '50s, San Diego's Coastal Cities Jazz Band has played throughout Southern California and Arizona since its formation in 1997. This concert at the Poway Performing Arts Center will feature the talented ensemble backing Owens on many of Streisand favorites, as well as tunes by Count Basie, Glenn Miller and Doc Severinsen. Beethoven’s moving Elegy for chorus and string orchestra begins a program that features stunning guest artist Maya Beiser performing Elgar’s heartbreaking Cello Concerto. In The General, author/librettist Paul Griffiths draws a composite score from Beethoven (Egmont, King Stephen, Leonore Prohaska and Opferlied) and adds text to create a dramatic work for orchestra, chorus, and actor that tells the story of the Rwandan tragedy through the eyes of the general leading the U.N. peacekeeping mission.
