As much a cultural phenomenon as a theatrical event, Cats enjoyed a record-breaking run on Broadway and in London, thanks to its feline-inspired costumes, sets, dancing and memorable songs by famed composer Andrew Lloyd Webber. The story, inspired by a collection of poetry from T.S. Eliot, revolves around a tribe known as the Jellicle cats, and their leader Old Deuteronomy, who'll choose one of their group to be reborn that night after their annual ball. The longest-touring Broadway musical in history, Cats features 20 of Webber's timeless melodies, including the hit song "Memory," and was the winner of seven 1983 Tony Awards, including Best Musical. When I saw the music stands on stage I thought we might be in trouble. All in all the show could have been introduced as The band who plays Doors music but think they are The Stones. The Doors were cultural pop artists that endure because of the music's latent chaos and Morrison's poetry portrayed by his somewhat vulnerable personna. The musicians missed on the first count and the singer struck out entirely as Morrison.
In the first half program they played the entire LA Woman album with much precision and enthusiasm but without much soul. After intermission they did a medley of greatest hits in which Lite My Fire and Riders on the Storm were memorable and the remainder fell pretty much short. Their rendition of "Crystal Ship" was a low point sounding like a car full of drunk musicians. The whole experience sums up to the fact that even an accurate note by note cover of pop music does not the artists replicate. Kinda like translating a foreign language literally using a dictionary.
