The Goodmans seem like a perfect family. The only problem is that sometimes mother Diana is, well ... a little too happy. Her husband Dan worries all the time. Her daughter Natalie seems awfully intent on getting that scholarship to Yale so she can leave home. And her son Gabe, well ... that's another story entirely. A musical about the devastating toll of mental illness on a contemporary suburban family might seem odd, but Next to Normal turned out to be one of Broadway's biggest hits. This modern rock musical won three Tony Awards in 2009 and the Pulitzer Prize for its heartbreaking, humorous and unflinchingly authentic look at a suburban family struggling with the effects of one family member's bipolar disorder. Each character's journey is punctuated by powerful music scored by Tom Kitt (American Idiot). Featuring 30 original songs, including "Just Another Day," "You Don't Know" and "Superboy and the Invisible Girl," Next to Normal is, in the words of The New York Times, "much more than a feel-good musical; it is a feel-everything musical." Written on Aug 11 2012Really great! The leads were especially strong, the staging quite impressive. The venue is wonderful - lots of EZ, free parking and restaurants - and all the seats are good.
Written on Jul 06 2012We were in the second to last row but the performance was so good that it didnt matter. That theater is perfect!
Written on Jul 05 2012I bought these tickets for my wife because she mentioned that she'd like to see this show again. I was a bit weary because of the venue and that you were not able to actually assign yourself a seat. But to my surprise and utter delight, we had great seats and the venue was excellent. It is a small theater but what it lacks in size, it makes up in how cozy it feels. There is not a bad seat in the house. As for the show... it was FANTABULOUS! The heat is on, in Saigon.
Written on Jun 18 2012Good music. There were some microphone difficulties but overall decent job.
