La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts presents veteran stage actress and former Olympic gymnast Cathy Rigby in the role that earned her a Tony nomination for her Broadway run. According to the Washington Post, "Rigby has mastered the singing, dancing and aerial shenanigans, but has also gotten to the core of the boy who wouldn't grow up." Soar with Peter Pan and the three Darling children as they fly away from their nursery to the magic and wonder of Neverland, where they encounter the cunning and evil Captain Hook, villainous pirates, a crafty crocodile and a sprightly fairy named Tinker Bell. Next to Normal, the Groundbreaking Hit Broadway Musical

Full Price:
$33.25 - $60.00
Our Price:
$11.50 - $30.00

The Goodmans seem like a perfect family. The only problem is that sometimes mother Diana is, well ... a little too happy. Her husband Dan worries all the time. Her daughter Natalie seems awfully intent on getting that scholarship to Yale so she can leave home. And her son Gabe, well ... that's another story entirely. A musical about the devastating toll of mental illness on a contemporary suburban family might seem odd, but Next to Normal turned out to be one of Broadway's biggest hits. This modern rock musical won three Tony Awards in 2009 and the Pulitzer Prize for its heartbreaking, humorous and unflinchingly authentic look at a suburban family struggling with the effects of one family member's bipolar disorder. Each character's journey is punctuated by powerful music scored by Tom Kitt (American Idiot). Featuring 30 original songs, including "Just Another Day," "You Don't Know" and "Superboy and the Invisible Girl," Next to Normal is, in the words of The New York Times, "much more than a feel-good musical; it is a feel-everything musical." We were mesmerized by Cathy Rigby in her soaring success, as a GRANDMOTHER, no doubt. This grandma has still got it, she was smokin' hot!

2nd time to this venue and it was just like I expected the first time, excellent. The production was great and the show was wonderfully done. Cathy Rigby is vivacious as she was when she was a gymnast. My 2 girls (7yrs and 5 yrs) had the time of their lives. Especially when Peter Pan flew right above us and sprinkled fairy dust everyone. Kudos Goldstar, kudos!

This is was the most spectacular event I have ever attended. My 3 grandchildren were mesmerized. They have not stopped talking about it. They will remember this forever. I am looking forward to to other kid friendly musicals.

Quotes & Highlights

  • See the video promo on YouTube.
  • There will be audience talk-back sessions with the cast on Wednesday, June 6 and Wednesday, June 20. These sessions are open to ticketholders.
  • "To see [Rigby's] fearless and ebullient flying, newly choreographed by Paul Rubin with even more athletic flips, is to suspect that the role actually functions as a youth elixir ...  [Brent Barrett as Captain Hook] is extremely charming, but children will be too busy cheering for Peter to mourn his fate. Afterward they’ll scramble to gather the fallen pixie dust from the carpet. Adults should consider grabbing a handful for themselves. Maybe it won’t confer eternal youth, but it can’t hurt." --Los Angeles Times

America first took notice of Cathy Rigby at the Mexico City Olympics in 1968, where she became the highest-scoring U.S. gymnast. Her spunkiness and drive to succeed quickly charmed audiences and she became known as “America’s Sweetheart of Gymnastics.”

During her gymnastics career, Rigby won numerous international medals (including eight gold) and competed in the Olympics a second time in 1972. She also won a silver medal on the balance beam at the 1970 World Championships, becoming the first American woman to medal in World Gymnastics.

In 1998, Rigby was inducted into the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame. After the ’72 Olympics, Rigby retired from gymnastics and joined ABC Sports, where she would stay for 18 years, providing expert commentary on the sport of gymnastics. During this time, ABC’s venerable Wide World of Sports named her one of “America’s Most Influential Women in Sports.”

Rigby later embarked on a new career in performing arts, making her stage debut as Peter in the arena version of Peter Pan. Rigby’s national and regional tour credits include Annie Get Your Gun, Meet Me In St. Louis, South Pacific, Paint Your Wagon, and The Unsinkable Molly Brown. On Broadway, she starred as the title role in Peter Pan in 1991 and 1998 and in Seussical the Musical as Cat-In-The-Hat in 2002.

Recently, Rigby starred in both A.R. Gurney’s Silvia and Steel Magnolias to rave reviews at the La Mirada as well as Lil’ Abner at UCLA’s Reprise. Rigby has been honored with the National Broadway Theatre Award’s 2004 Distinguished Lifetime Service Award from The League of American Theatres and Producers, Inc. In 1991, she was nominated for the Tony Award for Best Leading Actress in a Musical when she starred in the 35th Anniversary production of Peter Pan on Broadway. The show also earned more Tony and Emmy nominations after touring nationally. In 2001, A&E filmed Peter Pan and it is now available on DVD along with the soundtrack in stores nationwide.

Currently, Rigby and her husband, Tom McCoy, are Executive Producers of the McCoy Rigby Entertainment Series at LaMirada Theatre for the Performing Arts, and the new Fox Performing Arts Center in Riverside. There, they have successfully produced over 17 seasons of musicals, plays, concerts and special events. McCoy Rigby Entertainment has also launched many national touring productions, including Jesus Christ Superstar, Peter Pan, Camelot and Happy Days, the Musical.

Rigby and her husband also own and operate the McCoy Rigby Conservatory of the Arts in Yorba Linda with the goal of bringing the joy of acting, dancing and singing to their students. Rigby spends much of her spare time as a motivational speaker on the topics of nutrition and wellness.
