Winner of more than 30 international theatre awards, including three Tonys and a Laurence Olivier Award, Matthew Bourne's Swan Lake is a triumphant and thrilling reinterpretation of Tchaikovsky's original, Russian folk tale-inspired ballet. Bourne's iconic and breathtaking production -- which revolves around a young crown prince, his distant mother and the swan that represents the prince's desire for freedom -- took the dance world by storm when it premiered in 1995, and is perhaps best known for its replacement of the traditional female corps de ballet with a menacing male ensemble. The performance featured in this stunning, high-definition screening was filmed at London's Sadler's Wells Theatre in 2011 with a cast that includes Richard Windsor, Dominic North and Nina Goldman. “Frank and Raw, Spring Awakening Is Extraordinary” —Backstage
“… director Brian Kite has found an equally effective way to create the musical’s two very different worlds, the late 1800s in which Spring Awakening’s teenage cast of characters actually live, and the 2013 one in which they express their emotions through contemporary alternative rock.” —StageSceneLA.com
