This was one of the most entertaining and touching performances I've seen in a long time. Mr. Johnson's description of his art is fascinating, his technical skill as a ventriloquist is awesome, his stories about the pursuit of his art are tender and sweet, and his "dummies", whom I swear are alive, elicited uncontrollable laughter. Description
Jay Johnson: The Two and Only is a genre-bending theatrical experience incorporating a variety of theatre and storytelling techniques. It illuminates the history of the art form of ventriloquism from ancient Greece, through the Middle Ages, to vaudeville and the golden eras of radio and television. There are numerous demonstrations of the art form using diverse theatrical styles, which evoke various emotional responses, as well as a “coming of age” personal journey involving a master/apprentice relationship.
Themes include the importance of mentoring and mastery, a theoretical examination of the meaning of “art” and the exploration and embracing of one’s path.
Jay Johnson: The Two and Only is hilarious, moving and thought provoking. It is an ideal introduction to Broadway and live theatre. It was created by a team of veteran theatre professionals, who also share a love and understanding of the importance of arts education. History, Science, Language Arts and the Theatre Arts are each woven into the fabric of The Two and Only.
