This play tells about a husband and wife, and the hit love song he wrote for her whose proceeds have supported them nicely for 25 years. Real-life husband-and-wife Ellen and Scott Phelps play husband-and-wife Rose and Sam Abrams in this story of creative stagnation and an attempt to rekindle their relationship. When Sam's memories of his passionate youth send him seeking out a new muse on Facebook, Rose plans an anniversary cruise to the Greek islands, but will the music he hears coming from Siren's Island cause him to jump overboard?

Ken Ludwig's riotous farce takes place before a 1934 gala opera fundraiser in Cleveland, which suddenly loses its star tenor just minutes prior to curtain. This dire situation sets off a chain of disasters resulting in mistaken identities and double entendres galore, as a local impresario fumbles his way through a comedy of errors to ensure that the show does indeed go on. A smash hit on Broadway, this broad comedy, always an audience favorite, was also nominated for seven Tony and six Drama Desk Awards. Learn More

Well written. Nicely performed. The "Siren" was clearly the star of the show. She was wonderful. If you like odd stuff, you'll like this. Call it Sarah Ruhl light. The theatre is beautiful. It's in the old Lake Forest HS; a stadium black box with about 100 seats. Very little scenery. At full price ($35) way overpriced; but from Goldstar; I recommend it.

Clever, interesting script; well acted.
Theatre is in a High School, so had a bit of trouble finding it. Couldn't believe the GPS and the box office wasn't open to give directions. Luckily, they do have the information on their voice message under "directions".

Great play and wonderful cast. Really enjoyed it. It's a typical story of love needing re-kindling told in a slightly different way. The wife stole the show to my surprise. She came off annoying in the beginning but she made her character surprisingly charming toward the end. Sparse production, set-wise. Nice location and comfy theater. Would recommend to another theater-goer.

Quotes & Highlights

  • "You’ll laugh, you’ll cry and you’ll shake your head in recognition of all that any relationship goes through."--Mira Temkin, Chicago Upscale Travel Examiner
  • "Laufer’s funny, clever play pits a mid-life crisis to recapture youthful passion and the lure of a mythological maiden’s seductive music against the loving comfort of a long-term relationship."--Jodie Jacobs, Chicago Theater Examiner
  • "It is a modern day fable that will likely appeal to anyone who has been in a long term relationship.  And it is conveyed with a genuine sense of affection, sincerity and humor by Citadel founders Scott and Ellen Phelps, whose real life relationship adds considerably to their on stage pairing."--Chicago Stage Style
