Onyx Theatre presents Tennessee Williams' haunting, semi-autobiographical masterpiece The Glass Menagerie
. This heartbreaking memory play was the legendary playwright's first major success and is considered one of the great American plays of all time. The Glass Menagerie
plays out one fateful evening in the life of Tom, a poet who comes from a small family struggling to find happiness in their dingy St. Louis apartment. His overbearing mother Amanda desperately clings to her glowing memories of the past and her unrealistic hopes for the future, while his shy, crippled sister Laura slowly wilts under the weight of her expectations. When Tom is persuaded to bring home a friend as a gentleman caller for his sister, the possibility for love for poor fragile Laura raises everyone's hopes. When the reality of the situation is revealed, it destroys their insular world. Onyx Theatre's production presents Tom's recollection of that evening, surrounded by the light, music, and sentimentality of an aching memory.
