Elvis Costello and his band were great. The venue was nice but the section where they put Goldstar ticket holders was terrible. The sound was such that only the bass was being projected to that seating area.Written on Aug 20 2009

Elvis Costello and the Sugarcanes at Wente Vineyards was fantastic! Elvis and the band killed. Their country/folk/hits music really delivered. The band was tight and delivered an exciting sound to accompany Elvis' amazing voice, incredible lyrics and charm to match the new songs on the cd, Secret Profane & Sugarcane.Written on Aug 20 2009
For some reason, the people seated at the tables talked through the entire concert. I was in the first section in the fourth row.
Elvis and the band were fantastic. I love Elvis and the band and I will see them at Wente Vineyards any time they chose to perform there.

I need to rate the performance separately from the dinner. The performance by Elvis was great. I'd rate it a 5. However, the dinner was a major disappointment. Given all the promo about the quality of their restaurant, the dinner was mediocre at best. The only great thing about the dinner, was the quality of service provided by the wait staff.Written on Aug 20 2009

Absolutely fantastic!Written on Aug 20 2009
The venue is gorgeous (if not a bit...precious and staid). The meal was superb, something I rarely say, and never lightly.
Elvis and the Sugarcanes were spectacular. One of the best shows I've ever seen...and I see a lot! Played many of the best cuts from their perfect new album, plenty of old favorites and several well-chosen covers - all reworked for this crack bluegrass lineup. SO good! And the sound was crystal clear; at every point you could clearly make out each and every one of the 2 guitars, dobro, double bass, accordion, mandolin and fiddle. And unlike many show I see, there was plenty of bass!

Description
Elvis Costello’s latest album, Secret, Profane & Sugarcane, was produced by T Bone Burnett, during a three-day session at Nashville’s Sound Emporium Studio. The songs on the album were recorded with a group of some of America’s finest string band players from the world of traditional country music, Bluegrass and beyond. Joining Costello were Jerry Douglas (dobro), Stuart Duncan (fiddle), Mike Compton (mandolin), Jeff Taylor (accordion) and Dennis Crouch (double bass).
The album itself includes ten previously unrecorded songs. “Sulfur to Sugarcane” and “The Crooked Line” were co-written with T Bone Burnett while “I Felt The Chill” marks Costello’s second recorded songwriting collaboration with Loretta Lynn. Indeed these are the first Costello compositions to be predominantly rooted in acoustic music since his 1986 album, King Of America, Costello and Burnett’s first collaboration after meeting and touring together in 1984.
Costello’s American career began 5 years earlier when he first recorded in Nashville with George Jones in 1979. He returned to the city for Almost Blue, his 1981 album of classic country covers and again in 2004 to record a duet rendition of “The Scarlet Tide” with Emmylou Harris. This song, co-written with T Bone Burnett, went on to receive an Academy Award nomination for Alison Krauss’ rendition in the motion picture, “Cold Mountain” in 2003. “ I’ve crossed the United States a number of times over the last thirty years. There are towns that I look forward to visiting again…” Costello has said. “The third city that I played in America was New Orleans…So it doesn’t seem at all strange that I’ve made all or part of five of my albums in the Southern States.”
About the Ticket Supplier: Wente Vineyards
After learning about winemaking from Charles Krug, C. H. Wente, a first-generation immigrant from Germany, founded his own winery in 1883. Recognizing that the warm days, cool nights and gravelly soils of the Livermore Valley were ideal for growing grapes, he purchased 48 acres and planted vineyards. In 1918, C. H. Wente's sons Ernest and Herman joined the business, with Ernest managing the vineyards and Herman acting as winemaker. The company was later passed on to Ernest's only son Karl, and in 1977, Karl's young son Eric took the helm. Continuing the 125 year legacy, the winery is managed today by the Fourth Generation of the Wente family, Eric, Philip, Carolyn, and the Fifth Generation, Christine and Karl. The winery has grown to include over 2,000 acres of vineyards in the Livermore Valley, San Francisco Bay and 800 acres in Arroyo Seco, Monterey.
