My 80 year old mother and I attended the show last night at Wente Vineyards and had an amazing time. Neither of us had seen Liza live before and were stunned at how beautiful she was and at the quality of her voice. The first few songs were a bit rough, but then she came alive and her voice was incredible. Liza was funny, talented and gave an amazing performance. It was extremely cold and windy, which is not good for a singer's voice and she borrowed a sweatshirt from someone in the audience. Only Liza can look glamorous in a sweatshirt. My Mom's teeth were chattering and we weren't up on stage where she got the full blast of the weather. We were both thrilled with Liza and her performance. The band was fantastic too. She sang quite a few "new" old songs that while a very different style for her, complimented her voice beautifully. She has a new CD out and I will definitely buy it. She made no excuse for not dancing or jumping around - but noted that she just had knee replacement surgery. That is one of the most painful surgeries I know of and she still came out and gave one hell of a performance. If you ever have a chance to see her, go. You won't regret it. Liza has still got it all!

I had a wonderful time last night at Wente Vineyards! The venue is beautiful and an intimate setting which made the concert even more enjoyable. To my pleasant surprise, our seats were better than I anticipated. Ms. Minneli was a complete treat! She sang some of my favorite songs and some wonderful new ones. I thought she was very entertaining and interactive w/ her audience. She was in great spirits considering her recent knee surgery and the weather (it was VERY cold) but as she said, the show must go on. I was truly delighted in her performances of "Cabaret," "Maybe This Time," and "New York, New York!" It was a pleasure and privelage to be in attendance. Liza's concert made for a superb brithday present!

Liza, as always, gave an outstanding performance. There are just not many artists with her talent and desire to please her audience. She was somewhat hampered by recent knee surgery, but she gave it her all as usual. Don't pass up a chance to see this special talent while she is still performing. Outstanding musical group with her.

Description

Liza Minnelli was born on March 12, 1946, in Los Angeles, California to the actress/singer Judy Garland and Vincente Minnelli, the film director responsible for such classics as “Meet Me in St. Louis” and “An American in Paris.” She began her career at a very early age, co-starring with her mother in the movie “In the Good Old Summertime” in 1949.  At the age of 10, Liza hosted the first-ever TV broadcast of “The Wizard of Oz,” reaching a viewing audience of about 45 million people.

By the time she was 19, she had landed the lead role in “Flora, the Red Menace.” This Broadway performance won her a Tony for Best Actress in a musical. In 1967 she went on to star in several films that showcased her superb acting abilities (“Charlie Bubbles,” “The Sterile Cuckoo,” and “Tell Me That You Love Me, Junie Moon”).

In 1972, her movie career peaked when she played Sally Bowles in “Cabaret.” The film won eight Oscars, including Best Actress for Liza.  The role also earned her a Golden Globe and a British Film Academy Award.  The unqualified success of “Cabaret” put Liza on the covers of Time and Newsweek in the same week.

Liza also starred in the first concert ever filmed live for television in 1972.  “Liza with a Z” produced a Top 20 album and won the Emmy for Outstanding Single Program.  It has been released in recent years as a DVD.

Liza went on to appear opposite Robert DeNiro in the musical “New York, New York,” directed by Martin Scorsese, in 1977. In 1981, she co-starred with Dudley Moore in the movie “Arthur,” going on to make the sequel “Arthur 2” in 1988. Liza added a second Golden Globe to her already impressive list of awards in 1985 with her performance in “A Time to Live,” a made-for-TV movie. In 1989, she produced an album with Britain’s Pet Shop Boys called “Results” that was a huge hit all over Europe.

In 1997, Liza took over from an ailing Julie Andrews in Broadway’s “Victoria/Victoria.” Andrews had to leave the show to undergo vocal cord surgery which was not completely successful.  Liza later underwent the identical surgical procedure and made a full recovery. Liza returned to the Stage in December 1999 to pay tribute to her father in a show called “Minnelli on Minnelli” at New York’s Palace Theater.

Shortly after the CD of “Minnelli on Minnelli” was released in February 2000, Liza was hospitalized for encephalitis.  The prognosis was grim:  she was told that she would never walk, talk, dance or sign again. But Liza’s incredible will, determination and relentless hard work proved them wrong, and by June 2002, she was back on stage at the Beacon Theater in New York.  Her triumphant comeback CD entitled “Liza’s Back!” was released in October 2002 and she was seen as Lucille Austero on TV’s critically acclaimed Arrested Development.

In 2008 Liza returned to Broadway with “Liza’s at the Palace ...” which went on to win the Tony Award for Best Special Theatrical Event. It’s Liza’s fourth Tony. She recreated the show at the MGM Grand where her performance was filmed for an public television special and a DVD. The show’s cast recording was nominated for a Grammy Award.

About the Ticket Supplier: Wente Vineyards

After learning about winemaking from Charles Krug, C. H. Wente, a first-generation immigrant from Germany, founded his own winery in 1883. Recognizing that the warm days, cool nights and gravelly soils of the Livermore Valley were ideal for growing grapes, he purchased 48 acres and planted vineyards. In 1918, C. H. Wente's sons Ernest and Herman joined the business, with Ernest managing the vineyards and Herman acting as winemaker. The company was later passed on to Ernest's only son Karl, and in 1977, Karl's young son Eric took the helm. Continuing the 125 year legacy, the winery is managed today by the Fourth Generation of the Wente family, Eric, Philip, Carolyn, and the Fifth Generation, Christine and Karl. The winery has grown to include over 2,000 acres of vineyards in the Livermore Valley, San Francisco Bay and 800 acres in Arroyo Seco, Monterey.
