Wow this event was not what I expected. Because it's about Family Guy, a show I love, it's inherently going to be a little funny (not a total disaster). Having said that, a lot of things were disappointing.
First, Seth gets on stage and attempts to manage audience expectations by warning us that this is not a standup routine but he'll try to throw a joke in every once in awhile. I don't think it's wise to start off the show by telling you what it's not. He should have focused on what awesomeness he WAS going to offer us. He stood at a podium all the way to the left of the stage for the entire time he spoke, which wasn't all that long.
Then, he showed us an episode of Family Guy that had yet to air, telling us we were the first sneak peak to experience it. The episode was hilarious, but I did not need to pay an admission and drive all the way to Long Beach just to see an episode that's airing NEXT WEEKEND! Plus, the event advertised that we'd be seeing an episode Fox never allowed to air, and that's simply not what we ended up seeing.
Finally, Seth opened the floor to questions for more than half the show. How completely unstructured this event was. Seth talks at a podium with a sheet of notes for less than an hour, shows an episode I could watch on my DVR next week, and then answers audience questions for a really long time.
I had a decent time. I know I sound a bit harsh, but when I am expecting one thing and get something COMPLETELY different, the result is going to be disappointing. If I had paid full price for this, I'd have been much more upset. On the good side, the episode we saw was hilarious no doubt about it, Seth gave us some great insight into how the show is made and what his inspirations were, plus he acted out some of the characters and improvised. I just wish I knew what I was getting into when I committed to spending an evening at this event so far from home. If I had known the format would be so, for lack of a better word, lazy, I probably would not have attended.
The evening was redeemed with frozen yogurt after the show. Thank goodness for that!
Highlight of our evening: Our Goldstar tix ended up being in the very first row and pretty darn close to center.
We didn't show up expecting a "stand up" routine so it wasn't a big surprise when Seth prefaced his talk with that disclaimer. It was great to find out how they did things but I can't say it was totally entertaining.
Was annoying when the screen came down for showing the episode and it was on the VERY FRONT edge of the stage. People in the front rows had to scoot our butts forward, lay back and look up at the screen. THe first few rows were so obviously moveable so I don't understand why they had to squeeze more $$ out of the event by putting in extra rows in front.
Looking to our left to watch Seth was annoying too. Everyone basically had to turn in their seats.
THe final question of the evening went to the annoying blond lady in the front who kept talking to him and catching his attention during the show. And it was about LEGAL STUFF NO ONE CARED ABOUT. When she kept pressing with follow up comments, people kind of collectively sighed and hissed. It was good to see Seth in person but this event was definitely underwhelming.
This event was really good... it lasted just over three hours. It was pretty much Seth telling how he got to where he is. He takes a lot of time for questions and answers and, he even took some requests. He also showed us all an un-released 'Family Guy' episode. I thought this was going to be an episode that wasn't allowed to be released. But, it was a pre-view of an episode that is yet to be released. It was very fun and casual.
