By the Way, Meet Vera Stark: Sly Satire Skewers Hollywood Racism
- Full Price:
- $43.00 - $55.00
- Our Price:
- $21.50 - $27.50
Set in Hollywood over a 70-year period, Pulitzer Prize winner Lynn Nottage's pseudo-biographical comedy By the Way, Meet Vera Stark follows the life of a headstrong African-American actress who begins a career in the 1930s, at a time when her only shot at success lay in stealing small scenes in big Hollywood blockbusters. Seventy years later, film buffs reflect on the life and legacy of the controversial star, whose eventual fame and fortune came at the price of perpetuating dangerous stereotypes. Nottage artfully blends comedy and social commentary for a thoroughly entertaining yet thought-provoking picture of the cultural climate that shaped Vera Stark. Clever and illuminating, this show draws on screwball films of the 1930s and uses today's fascination with celebrity and controversy to get to the truth behind the legend, and reflect on who she might have been if she'd lived in a different time. Written on May 23 2011Great job by the cast (who were also the food servers) We laughed the whole show!
Written on May 16 2011The show was fun and interactive. We particularly liked the vaudeville skits at the end.
Written on May 09 2011My husband and I had a very enjoyable evening. I especially liked the 80s songs bit--it was brilliant. I'm looking forward to seeing their next show.
Written on May 09 2011Great entertainment! Cast members really did a fantastic job of keeping us laughing! Lots of references to the 80's, which is a big plus if you grew up in the era -we did, so we were enjoying all the jokes.
Just wanted to add that they do serve simple foods and drinks. We had no idea and went to eat prior to the show. Their menu includes hot dogs, nachos, popcorn etc..
Written on May 09 2011I enjoyed the show, but it was not on par with the past performances I have seen at this venue! maybe I came on the 'understudy' night? but I missed some of the talent I had seen before.
The cinnamon pretzel with ice cream was a great idea, but the pretzel was almost unchewable! yuck!
Written on May 06 2011The creative humor of Ken Parks was right on once again! And the talented cast gets better every time. The Oleo was really funny for this show--great visual humor and punch lines--full of belly laughs.
Written on May 04 2011Third time seeing the show. The audience was a little small, but it was a great show none the less. I particularly enjoyed the dynamic between Eric Modyman as Artie and Michael Ornelas as Doc (both of whom I know personally). The two have been working together for many years, and their compatibility with one another really showed on stage. I was a little disappointed that Ken Parks did not play Buff this night, but Chris Egan does play the role well too (though Park's ad-libs were certainly missed). Once again, don't ever go to the Melodrama expecting Shakespeare, go expecting to just have some fun and a truly different theater experience, as the performers are also your servers and enjoy mingling with the audience and making sure you have a great time. Hands down one of the friendliest theaters around.
Written on May 04 2011I went during the theaters Second Annual Easter Egg Hunt and had an absolute blast. The melodrama hid a multitude of eggs around the theater (some in obvious spots, others in rather well hidden ones) and placed several eggs in the show as well. The audience member to get closest to finding the location of all the eggs won an excellent prize, which I believe was two tickets to Disneyland and season tickets to the theater as well. On top of that, they offered a free scoop of ice cream with a peep to celebrate easter. It's a wonderful little experience that only the Melodrama offers.
The show itself was lots of fun, and you can always tell the actors are enjoying themselves. And when the actors have fun, the audience has fun. The actors I saw were Matt Riggle (Artie), Dale Jones (Doc), Courtney Moon (Eileen), Eric Modyman (Greg), and Ken Parks (Buff). All five were wonderful and lots of fun to watch, though Ken and Courtney really stole the show. And while yes, the show is corny style humor, it's all family friendly and in good taste. If you don't like cheesy jokes, then this won't be your cup of tea. But if you're up for an easy story line with lots of pop culture references, some well written and witty dialogue and jokes every few seconds, this is the place for you.
Written on May 03 2011Great family fun. Well written and played. We'll definately go there again. Make time to check out the Shoreline Village too. The eats at the melodrama are just snacks and drinks. Plan on dinner elsewhere unless you want hot dogs or chili Fritos.
Written on May 02 2011The show was ok and had very funny lines...but some lines borderline on the "corny" side (pa-rum-pah), but I expected a little more from the show. More audience interaction would have helped to make it better. I definitely like the musical satires better. Without the funny songs, it comes across a little dry....
Written on May 02 2011A fast-paced, hilarious take on the movie with nearly the same name, complete with period music, costumes, references, all served up in a unique melodrama style. We had a rollicking good time and are recommending it to all we know.
Written on May 02 2011Very cool play...the actors were awesome!! Had a great time with the family and friends. The actors interact with you and make the whole event so much fun!
Written on May 02 2011Another light and fun All American Melodrama hit. Well written and acted, with plenty of humor throughout the short but enjoyable show.
Written on May 01 2011I went to this event because of the high ratings and praise so perhaps had unrealistic expectations, but for me it was just ok. It was kind of cute though rather corny with standard 80's references and jokes.
Written on Apr 27 2011We had a great time, and for a very reasonable price. Loved the snack selection also.
Written on Apr 25 2011Suggestion -- don't try to drink your soda and chug your popcorn while the show is on or you will snort bubbles up your nose and miss a joke or two!
Written on Apr 25 2011Fun time for a great price. Sort of like eating cotton candy; it's sweet and tasty but not much substance. This is a very small theater and every seat is stage side. Live piano was an unexpected bonus.
Written on Apr 25 2011A comic twist based on a classic 80's movie. This show was not flashing or glamorous. But, it was a blast to see. I brought my 11 year old who has seen all 3 of the movies and she loved it. A good portion of the jokes/humor are based on 80's theme's. So if you are a product of the 80's you have to go see this. I am all ready planning a trip there with a bunch of friends.
Written on Apr 20 2011As always, we had another great time. This was a great show, and if you grew up on the Back to the Future movies you'll love it. One highlight was an entire dialogue made up of 80's song titles!
Written on Apr 12 2011It was fun and entertaining. I enjoyed it.
Written on Apr 12 2011I showed up and it looked completely hokey, but this show was amazing. Anyone who grew up in the generation of Back to the Future will thoroughly enjoy this show. They had an amazing scene that quoted songs for the 80s for a solid 2 minutes. It was brilliant. It was a little awkward because the actors, were also the people that would serve you food at intermission, but I would definitely go back again. This is a show for anyone that doesn't take themselves too seriously.
Written on Apr 06 2011I have been a fan of this Melodrama Theatre ever since it opened and I have seen every production they have produced. This was great fun, as usual. It is wonderful to see that the audiences have really increased. Ken and company do a bang up job. Go and have a fun evening.
Written on Apr 05 2011Another very fun show, loved all the subtle and not so subtle 80's references and humor.
Written on Apr 05 2011We just love this place. Yes, the skits lean to the "corny" side, but they are so fresh and funny that we laugh nearly all through it. The people are just SUPER NICE!! It is such a pleasant way to spend a family evening out,. Clean, fun, and good snacks too. The price is great to.
Written on Mar 29 2011The All American Melodrama Theater is always a fun place to go.
Written on Mar 29 2011Always so much fun!!!!!
Written on Mar 28 2011Lots of fun! Versatile troupe of creative actors. Variety of humor -- "inside" humor for those who keep up politically, old jokes worth repeating, true to the old time melordrama.
Written on Mar 28 2011We thoroughly enjoyed the show. We've been to several productions here and they always keep us laughing, it is just plain fun. It seems impossible but each productions seems better than the one before.
Written on Mar 28 2011Awesome show! Had my group laughing the entire time!
Written on Mar 22 2011great show, always fun to see the shows
