Winner of five Tony Awards including Best Musical and Best Composer and Lyricist, the classic musical Man of La Mancha retells the timeless story of Miguel Cervantes' Don Quixote, as a play-within-a-play. The author Cervantes re-enacts his story of the mad knight, a dying old man who lives in a world of his imagination as he awaits his hearing in the Spanish Inquisition. The show features the songs "Dulcinea," "I'm Only Thinking of Him," "I Really Like Him" and the show-tune standard, "The Impossible Dream." Davis Gaines, best known for starring in The Phantom of the Opera for more than 2000 performances in Los Angeles, San Francisco and on Broadway, plays Quixote. Learn More

The Goldstar seats were great. I think the Carpenter Center is a great place for events like this.Written on Nov 02 2009
The cast was capable, but what is so wonderful about the film doesn't seem to translate very well to the stage. The added songs only seem to slow things down and some of the stagings of the slower songs practically bring the story to a standstill (and not in a good way).
The ice skating scene was impressive the but song perfomed in that scene was lackluster. I know Musical Theater West cannot make big changes to the musical, but this show could use some.
At the start of the performance, it was mentioned that the audience had been requesting this production for over ten years. Surely based on love of the film. To that I say, be careful what you wish for.
I rate it okay, because the Cast tries their best and there are some good songs, but don't wear a watch because you will find yourself checking it every few minutes.

GREAT show, as usual for Musical Theatre West! I call it the closest thing to Broadway quality theater on the West Coast. Highly talented cast, and the feel-good style of the staging was perfect. The two little girls in the show were outstanding, as was Cathy Newman who played the Katie/housekeeper role. Her timing and delivery was impeccable. Sets were impressive, and I was upgraded to what must have been a house seat, so I felt really well taken care of by the folks at MTW. Also, ate at a fairly decent Pizza place within walking distance on the corner and watched the Lakers game...great evening!Written on Nov 16 2009

A First Rate Performance! The sets were stunning and handled like a Broadway performance, from the house that slides with ease from an outdoor setting to an indoor one to the one scene ice skating rink (which disappears in one song) - the stage was a feast for the eyes! The actors sang, danced and acted superbly - each becomes identifiable to the audience. An additional treat was Margret O'Brien from the 1944 movie version on hand to be recognized on stage and available for a meet and greet during intermission and after the show. Our family are fans of many of her movies, it was nice to honor one of the few surviving actors from the days of the silver screen. Though I am new to Musical Theater West, the 57 year old theater company is a gem to the Carpenter Center, and this will not be my only time watching a production with this theater company. I look forward to enjoying many more performances.Written on Nov 16 2009

More Information About Meet Me In St. Louis
Description
Meet Me in St. Louis is the stage version of the memorable 1944 MGM motion picture which tells the story of four sisters living in St. Louis at the time of the Louisiana Purchase Exposition World's Fair in 1904. It played for 252 performances on Broadway at the George Gershwin Theatre and starred Betty Garrett, George Hearn, Charlotte Moore and Milo O'Shea. It was directed by Louis Burke with choreography by Joan Brickhill. The musical varies from the film with additional songs and some additional character development; the focus is not primarily on the character of Esther, as in the film.
The MGM film version of "Meet Me in St. Louis" stars Judy Garland, Margaret O'Brien, Mary Astor, Lucille Bremer, Tom Drake, Leon Ames, Marjorie Main, June Lockhart, and Joan Carroll. The movie was adapted by Irving Brecher and Fred F. Finklehoffe from a series of short stories by Sally Benson, originally published in The New Yorker magazine and later in the novel 5135 Kensington.
The film was directed by Vincente Minnelli, who met his future wife, Judy Garland, on the set. In the film, Garland debuted the standards "The Trolley Song" and "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" which became hits before the film was released.
