This truly spectacular show not only features amazing feats of strength, agility and flexibility from the skilled performers of this world-famous Chinese troupe -- but you may be more than pleasantly surprised by the company's display of sly humor, dazzling color and great music. Drawing on more than 2000 years of tradition, the Peking Acrobats create a true cirque-style carnival of dance, gymnastics, plate-twirling, juggling and cycling that's gained them worldwide fame -- including an appearance in the hit movie Ocean's 11. This event was actually more of an operetta, not a musical in my opinion. Both my guest and I could not wait for it to be over, as we were fighting to stay awake. The singer's voices just were just not rich with great overtones as is usual and expected with Broadway Musicals. Furthermore neither of us detected much of a plot, and the scenery and stage props were limited, but the costumes were very good. The venue and seats were great though.
Rex Smith, who made the role of Frederic in The Pirates of Penzance famous on both the Broadway stage and in the Universal film of the same name, will star as the Pirate King in MTW's upcoming production of The Pirates of Penzance.
Smith made his Broadway debut as Danny Zuko in the original production of Grease! He received the Theater World Award for his portrayal of Frederic in the Joseph Papp version of The Pirates of Penzance on Broadway, and also starred in the Universal Pictures film adaptation with Kevin Kline and Linda Rondstadt. On Broadway, Rex also starred in The Human Comedy, Grand Hotel, The Scarlet Pimpernel and most recently Annie Get Your Gun. Rex also starred in Lincoln Center's Anything Goes, The Kennedy Center's West Side Story, and the Canadian production of Sunset Boulevard opposite Diahann Carroll. On TV, Rex hosted Solid Gold, starred in ABC's Street Hawk and the daytime TV series As The World Turns. His TV movies include Sooner or Later (also the title of his platinum album featuring the hit song, “You Take My Breath Away”), Daredevil and Danielle Steele's Once in a Lifetime. Rex has guest starred on the primetime series Norm, JAG, Caroline in the City, The Sentinel, Baywatch and Pacific Blue. Rex most recently starred in the national tour of Kiss Me Kate.
