It was good - but not great. Some of the actors were superb and a couple were not up to their roles. Steve Martin is a very witty guy and some of his signature style was evident but it all seemed a little short on meaningful and comedic insights into the possibilities of a meeting between these two great men. As usual, the Long Beach Playhouse proved to be a comfortable venue for playgoers.Written on Apr 06 2009

Description
By Steve Martin
Directed by Andrew Vonderschmitt
Long Beach Playhouse begins its Studio theatre season with Steve Martin's Picasso at the Lapin Agile. Set in 1904, the play supposes the meeting of two of history's greatest minds, Pablo Picasso and Albert Einstein, at a Parisian café. On the verge of life-changing discoveries, both men delve into their theories on the definition of genius and talent. A host of bystanders, including Picasso's date and an eccentric inventor add flourishes of humor. The merriment culminates when a charismatic, dark-haired singer is time warped from a later era.
Long Beach Playhouse proudly introduces its own Andrew Vonderschmitt, making his Studio theatre directing debut with Picasso at the Lapin Agile. Director Vonderschmitt is pleased to introduce the season with a piece he is sure the audience will find witty and thought-provoking. He sees this production as an opportunity to hone in on Long Beach Playhouse's efforts to introduce cutting edge works in the 99-seat equity-waiver Studio theatre. He states, "The piece is interactive, calling the audience to eaves drop on the playful conversation between characters; Dismiss the idea of watching actors on a stage, investigate the dialog that plays with the language and begs a less serious tone while still being entirely engaging."
For this production the Long Beach Playhouse is also introducing a silent auction of Picasso-inspired works, titled Les Demoiselles d' Lapin Agile by Joseph Van Hooten. The work is a large scale painting divided into four smaller sections of 4 foot square canvases that have been incorporated into the set. The individual sections will be auctioned off throughout the run of the production. Bid entries can be made on the Long Beach Playhouse website, Monday to Thursday, and at performances with the winner of each piece will be announced at the final show on Saturday April 11th.
