An affectionate and hilarious look back at the golden age of vaudeville, Neil Simon's The Sunshine Boys has been a crowd pleaser since it premiered on Broadway in 1972. The comedy centers around Lewis and Clark, two longtime entertainment partners whose career and friendship came to a sudden and acrimonious end over a decade ago. Now Clark's nephew convinces the former duo to resurrect their most famous routine for a TV special on the history of comedy, and hijinks ensue as the cantankerous coots try to work together despite their feud. On the whole, I'm glad to have seen this production of The Fantasticks, because I really enjoy the story and the music, but the quality was only so-so. I saw it on 9/5/13, which I believe was the first night tickets were available, so perhaps some of the unevenness will be smoothed out and some of the weak points improved over the course of the run. The actors playing Luisa and El Gallo were the strongest in a cast of varying acting, singing, and dancing capabilities. Their scenes and the ones involving the parents were among the most enjoyable. One of the biggest disappointments, on the other hand, was the virtual lack of chemistry between Luisa and Matt, which took almost all charm and enchantment out of their pivotal scenes. Also, the actor playing Matt did not have much oomph behind his signing, so, even though he sang the songs nicely, his singing seemed weak, and that lowered the energy level of his scenes. I'm relieved to have seen this performance with discounted tickets, because I fear I would have felt cheated had I paid full price, especially given the much higher quality theatre I've seen elsewhere for the same price.
