The actors were terrific! The play is different than most & tells its story with creativity & surprises. It's fast-paced, funny & sad. The theater is a joy because of its small size and friendly, small town atmosphere.
The House of Blue Leaves is the story Artie Shaughnessy, a zookeeper by day who harbors dreams of songwriting fame and glory. Laden by his wife’s mental illness, his son’s alienating behavior, and his girlfriend’s Lady Macbeth-like demands, Artie struggles hopelessly to attain his singular desire. From the seedy piano bars to a rundown Queens apartment, his world and its inhabitants conspire to hold him back—the visiting Pope, a trio of zealous nuns, the military police, psyche-ward orderlies, and eccentric Hollywood personalities. At once madcap and zany then sinister and nihilistic, Guare’s House of Blue Leaves is door-slamming comic farce, a gritty kitchen-sink drama, and a metaphysical contemplation on the purpose of one’s existence all rolled into one. It’s a play that can’t easily be pigeon-holed.
