A heart-rending debut, a crowd-pleasing favorite and an iconic work are the highlights of Smuin Ballet's winter program XXtremes. For the first time ever in Northern California, the company will perform Jiri Kylian's acclaimed Return to a Strange Land, set to music by Czech composer Leos Janacek. Return expresses the journey from loss to hope with rare elegance and astonishing form. Brought back by popular demand, the company will also dance Dear Miss Cline, a buoyant and colorful romp through the music of Patsy Cline. Choreographed by the company's own Amy Seiwert, the piece features 10 Nashville tunes, including the immortal "Walkin' After Midnight." Finally, Smuin Ballet will pay tribute to its late, great founder Michael Smuin by performing his Carmina Burana. Set to the pulse-thumping cantata by Carl Orff, the choreography of Carmina Burana exemplifies the rhythm, speed and syncopation for which Smuin Ballet is beloved. Learn More

Five of us attended this performance. The Bayer Ballet Dance Academy is Russian in origin and you could tell that the many youths of all ages were taught to be precise in their dance movements. All beautiful youths taught to dance with grace and great smiles. One friend told me she didn't realize it was mostly youth dancers,so didn't care for it. But I thought that this was a perfect family show and the costumes designed by the Bayer Academy were absolutely wonderful. I would have liked a live orchestra as the music was only recorded and sometimes lacked good fidelity depending on the score.
Hop aboard the Summer Dance Carousel and take your family on a ride to the enchanted world of fairy tales and magical folklore in the glorious Russian ballet tradition. This bright and colorful ballet showcase features professional dancers—principal dancers of the San Jose Ballet, as well as performances by students from the Bayer Ballet Academy.
The dances in Part 1 range from classical, character and folk through contemporary pieces—all subtly contained in a lovely woodland theme. Enjoy the flowers and mushrooms of the forest, colorful polka and tarantella pieces, Russian folk dances as well as guest appearances from Little Red Riding Hood, Sleeping Beauty, the The Nutcracker and Coppélia.
In Part 2, the stage is transformed into a brilliantly beautiful Russian market. The remarkable dancers will steal your hearts as they spin their tale with the expressive and precise movement that characterizes the Russian ballet style. Original choreography to beloved music includes selections from Igor Stravinsky's Petrouchka and Firebird. Vivid characters, colorful costumes, and technical precision of movements set to a brilliant music of Stravinsky will bring to life magical folklore, including Baba Yaga the witch and other unforgettable characters from the Russian tradition.
The music, costumes and stunning dancing make The Summer Dance Carousel a "don't miss" event for the whole family.
