Widely considered to be one of the top three ballet companies in America, San Francisco Ballet invites you to attend three performances from its 2014 season in the opulent War Memorial Opera House. This package allows you to see some of the most exciting dance performances in the country, some of them being staged for the first time ever. Your SF Ballet experience begins with the season opener, Giselle. One the greatest romantic ballets in the classical repertory, this is the heartbreaking tale of a peasant girl with a fragile heart, a passion for dancing and a weakness for a man who belongs to someone else. Next, you'll attend a program of three ballets that includes an exciting world premiere by Val Caniparoli, as well as encore presentations of two critically acclaimed works from the 2013 season. The final performance is Cinderella, Christopher Wheeldon's magical new production of the fairy tale ballet that was so popular last year it's been brought back for another round. This was a fun show to go to on Father's Day with our 4.5 year old daughter. The show was around 2.5-3 hrs including a 20 minute intermission, so a little on the long side, but my daughter was entranced the entire time (she loves ballet). The young ballerinas were excellent and the ballerinas from the San Jose Ballet were fabulous. The short dance excerpts were great for the younger crowd. Also, though the sets were simple, the costumes were stunning and beautiful. Excellent show.
Hop aboard the Summer Dance Carousel and take your family on a ride to the enchanted world of fairy tales and magical folklore in the glorious Russian ballet tradition. This bright and colorful ballet showcase features professional dancers—principal dancers of the San Jose Ballet, as well as performances by students from the Bayer Ballet Academy.
The dances in Part 1 range from classical, character and folk through contemporary pieces—all subtly contained in a lovely woodland theme. Enjoy the flowers and mushrooms of the forest, colorful polka and tarantella pieces, Russian folk dances as well as guest appearances from Little Red Riding Hood, Sleeping Beauty, the The Nutcracker and Coppélia.
In Part 2, the stage is transformed into a brilliantly beautiful Russian market. The remarkable dancers will steal your hearts as they spin their tale with the expressive and precise movement that characterizes the Russian ballet style. Original choreography to beloved music includes selections from Igor Stravinsky's Petrouchka and Firebird. Vivid characters, colorful costumes, and technical precision of movements set to a brilliant music of Stravinsky will bring to life magical folklore, including Baba Yaga the witch and other unforgettable characters from the Russian tradition.
The music, costumes and stunning dancing make The Summer Dance Carousel a "don't miss" event for the whole family.
