Black Angels Over Tuskegee, the Los Angeles historical drama turned Off-Broadway hit with a run starting in 2010 and still going strong, with plans for a Broadway transfer, returns to the city where it all began with a performance at the Wilshire Ebell. Layon Gray's play is the true story of six men embarking upon a journey to become Tuskegee Airmen in the United States Army Air Forces. The play explores their collective struggle with Jim Crow laws, their intelligence, their patriotism, their dreams of an inclusive fair society and the brotherhood they found in each other as they persevered -- and excelled -- in the face of the enormous obstacles acting against them. TV's Lamman Rucker (Why Did I Get Married) stars in the play, and members of the Los Angeles chapter of Tuskegee Airmen will be present at the Wilshire Ebell to celebrate the 72nd anniversary of the Tuskegee Airmen's founding. Written on Feb 22 2011I feel kind of bad not giving this show 5 stars, because it supported a tremendously worthy cause, but there were definite high and low points to the evening.
The highs: clearly enthusiastic performers who embraced the challenge and gave it their all.
The lows: uneven writing and direction between the various sketches/plays. Granted, they were given an awfully short window of time and some tricky requirements as far as working in specific dialogue, but some of the writers and directors did a much better job than others.
On another note (not that he was a major draw for me but) the show was promoted as "Lance Bass hosts..." and he was nowhere to be seen. I was also expecting to see participation by more "name" talent. They did a good job of ensuring at least one recognizable person was involved in each show, but if I hadn't been able to access imdb on my phone, I couldn't have named one thing most of the performers had been in if someone had paid me.

Written on Feb 21 2011So much fun and so surprisingly hilarious -- and all for a great cause. I was truly surprised by what the teams of writers, directors and actors pulled together in 24 hours. They showed such creativity and had the whole house laughing. And the VIP after-party was fantastic. Hope this is an annual event!

Description
Where forty of Hollywood's most talented writers, directors and actors will come together to create a wildly entertaining and energizing night of fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants theater... all within 24 hours!
The work starts the evening before the show. A group of writers will have 12 hours to compose six 10-minute plays. At 8:00am on the morning of the event, the scripts will be handed off to an assembly of directors and actors, who will then rehearse the material into the afternoon. After a technical rehearsal and red carpet arrivals, the show starts—only 24 hours after the process began.
It's going to be a mad rush to show time... and once there, be ready for a hysterical night of fun.
VIP ticketholders are invited to celebrate the success of the night along with the show's celebrity cast, writers and directors at a cocktail reception at the beautiful historic Wilshire Ebell Clubhouse afterward... with rumors of a special surprise guest performance.
This fundraiser will benefit The Baby Dragon fund, which fuels Crystal Meth Recovery Services at the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center.
