Actress, dancer and choreographer Debbie Allen's fun, fresh spin on The Nutcracker returns to Royce Hall for the holidays. The Hot Chocolate Nutcracker gives the seasonal favorite a rich new cultural context and updated characters, and features a lively contemporary score with original songs from multiple-Grammy-winner Mariah Carey and others. After young Kara receives a nutcracker filled with hot chocolate, she falls asleep and journeys to enchanted lands, including Candy Cane Lane, Egypt, the Rainforest, Jazzland, Russia and the Land of the Kimono Dolls. Little ones will have no trouble following along thanks to the narration by three wisecracking mice: Harvey, Schmink and Buckey. Allen herself appears in this fun holiday musical adventure. Quotes & Highlights
- "His playing consistently engages the attention, because of his sweet, strong sound, his tremendous attention to artistic detail and his total mastery of the concerto." --Seattle Times
<p>Drop in on a lively discussion between Socrates and his followers on the nature of love. Comic, ethereal, purely scientific, rapturous and all-powerful, Bernstein captures every nuance of the debate described in Plato's Symposium. A violin concerto in all but name, the Serenade is the perfect showcase for celebrated star Cho-Liang Lin. LACO's own Susan Greenberg, known for her "panache and musical projection," (LA Times) sets the tone with a sparkling exploration of the piccolo, flute and alto flute written for her by Hollywood-based Gernot Wolfgang. The concert concludes with the gorgeous Schumann symphony that has been called "a miracle of the human spirit."</p> <p>Program:</p>
