Two stories of two different women living in present day Cairo, Egypt and how even today their voices are not being heard and they are being oppressed by the society and culture they live in.Written on Dec 19 2005
It tells in a very real way what the consequences of this silencing of their voices does to these two women.

More Information About Acts of Desire
Description
Magic realism sets the tone of Acts of Desire, an evening of two one-act plays: Karima's City and Such a Beautiful Voice is Sayeda's, by Egyptian-American playwright Yussef El Guindi. Directed by Deborah Lawlor, Acts of Desire will have its Southern California premiere at the Fountain Theatre.
Each play explores the ordinary life of a Muslim woman struggling against deep-seated cultural habits that threaten to suffocate her uniqueness. Yet each of these women finds a voice all her own.
In Karima's City, Karima is shocked and outraged at the destruction of her neighborhood's charm, as its little shops are destroyed and its trees are obliterated to make way for development. Her anger evolves into a strong voice of protest.
In Such a Beautiful Voice is Sayeda's, the title character makes an inner discovery: she finds in herself a beautiful singing voice she never knew she had. But nobody wants to hear it!
The cast of Acts of Desire includes: Mueen Jahan Ahmad, Naila Azad, Marc Casabani, Grace Nassar, Navid Negahban, Sarah Ripard and Marisa Vural.
Produced by Simon Levy, the design team includes: Scott Seidman (Set design), Kathi O'Donohue (lighting design), Naila Aladdin-Sanders (Costumes), Dave Marling (Sound) and Alfred Madain (Music Director).
Playwright Yussef El Guindi lives in Seattle. His most recent work, Back of The Throat, won the 2004 Northwest Playwright's Competition. The play has received productions in San Francisco and Seattle and is scheduled to be produced in Chicago, Anchorage, North Carolina and Cairo, Egypt. His other plays include Ten Acrobats In An Amazing Leap of Faith, Murder In The Mirrorand Men On Mars. He holds an MFA from Carnegie-Mellon University and was playwright-in-residence at Duke University.
