Charming tenor Alek Schrader makes his LA Opera debut as the virginal Albert Herring, a young mama's boy who becomes the "King of the May" for his village. The honor typically goes to a fair local maiden, but alas, Albert is the only innocent to be found this year. After some overindulgence in "liquid courage" at his coronation ceremony, Albert finally finds the nerve to seek out adventure for himself. Despite the lighthearted nature of the plot and the genuinely funny text, Albert Herring is musically complex and was proclaimed "the greatest comic opera of the century" by Ukrainian pianist Sviatoslav Richter. LA Opera makes it more accessible to audiences by presenting the English-language work with the text projected onto a screen.

$37.00 - $88.00
Our Price:
$18.50 - $44.00

The San Francisco Symphony and Chorus present A Summer Celebration, a star-studded concert with an eclectic program and several exciting guests. Conducted by San Francisco Symphony music director Michael Tilson Thomas and San Francisco Symphony Chorus director Ragnar Bohlin, the concert begins with Ligeti's Lux Aeterna, made famous by 2001: A Space Odyssey. Pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet joins the Symphony to play excerpts from Ravel's jazzy Piano Concerto in G major, and Avery Fisher Prize-winning violinist Gil Shaham makes an appearance, playing the last movement of Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto. This delightful program also includes the fourth movement of Rachmaninoff's Symphony No. 2 and excerpts from Rodgers and Hammerstein's South Pacific, making for a full evening of sparkling symphonic music. It was a charming simple story, but after awhile the charm wears off. Part of our problem was reading the super titles from so far back. Somehow it didn't seem like a "real" opera.
