SF Symphony: Barantschik and Vinocour Play Britten's Double Concerto

The San Francisco Symphony, under the baton of conductor Kirill Karabits, spotlights violinist Alexander Barantschik and violist Jonathan Vinocour for a performance of Benjamin Britten's Double Concerto. Written as a tribute for Britten's composition teacher when the composer was just 18, the Double Concerto is a challenging piece that requires immense technical skill on both the violin and viola. Its youthful vigor is sure to challenge the virtuosity of the Symphony's Concertmaster and Principal Violist. The program also features Honegger's Pacific 231 and Sibelius' Symphony No. 2. Learn More

Written on Apr 02 2012great production, Conlon's conducting was spot-on.
Written on Mar 15 2012It was a charming simple story, but after awhile the charm wears off. Part of our problem was reading the super titles from so far back. Somehow it didn't seem like a "real" opera.
Written on Mar 15 2012James Conlon's conducting was perfect. The cast was perfect with excellent singing. Staging just right. Over all a lovely fun evening at the opera
Written on Mar 15 2012Ensemble piece, excellent voices and well directed, I would recommend
Albert Herring.
Written on Mar 15 2012Very well acted and enjoyable.
Music fits the action and is different and interesting.
Written on Mar 15 2012Light opera, comic yet poignant. Good production.
Written on Mar 15 2012I knew nothing about this opera, but it was great - interesting social and political commentary underlying everything. And it's pretty funny.
The seats were fabulous.
Written on Mar 15 2012Great performances by cast and orchestra. See it before it's too late!
Written on Mar 15 2012Great music, fabulous singers and orchestra. The production was fresh and lively, on a level with Long Beach Opera (the ultimate around here), not the tired warhorse material frequently cranked out by LA Opera. The most listener-friendly Britten opera, this should have been the hottest ticket of the season. But since it wasn't, we got great Founders Circle seats and had the time of our lives. But be sure to take nourishment when you go--the idiots at the Music Center caterers failed to order any sandwiches, and it the opera had been of Wagnerian length, the audience might have turned into the Donner party.
Written on Mar 15 2012The performance was everything I hoped it to be. This is a great opera to go to if you have never been to one. It is performed in English, has an easy plot to follow and moves at a brisk pace. I saw Albert Herring the last time it was at the Chandler.....20 years ago (gasp!).
Written on Mar 14 2012I'll listen tonight on KUSC. The "antics" were fun and the staging was terrific. I was waiting for a melodic aria and didn't find one; however, the cast was wonderful.
Written on Mar 13 2012Great performance of a rarely performed opera
Written on Mar 12 2012Not the best opera more an operetta good orchestra
Written on Mar 09 2012Great seats! I'm not a huge opera fan like my husband, and in spite of the fact that Britten's music doesn't provide any hummable tunes, it was an easy opera to follow (sung in English) with quite a bit of humor sprinkled throughout.
Written on Mar 09 2012Light opera, not very melodic, but the comedy moves along with good acting. Don't miss it if only to see Richard Bernstein!
Written on Mar 09 2012It was not very melodic and lacked good arias. Also, some voices did not carry and although it was in English, I had to rely on subtitles as it was difficlut to understand the words. Not really very funny, just a tad.
Written on Mar 08 2012I loved this performance - the acting was superb - especially the children. In particular, Caleb Glickman, as Harry, was a real standout. What a pro. I am sure we will seeing much more of him in the future. What a nice break from the warhorse productions. I would definitely see this again.
Written on Mar 06 2012I slept thru most of it so can't actually say "I hated it!"
Written on Mar 06 2012Total torture. Very minor work that is way too long as well.
Written on Mar 06 2012Excellent production. Good singing, acting and lots of energy. I enjoyed the "chamber opera" scale of it -- a nice change from the "grand" productions of most staged operas. Alek's voice has yet to grow, but it carries well and he's a convincing actor. Recommended.
Written on Mar 05 2012Charming scenery and costumes, but the direction and much of the acting was alarmingly amateurish. Lots of generalized play-acting and goofy facial expressions, lacking in playing objectives or an understanding of the social classes and personal relationships. "Albert" engaged in physical and facial contortions, upstaging the others rather than playing clear objectives or the character's simple and pure qualities - came across like an unlikeable spoiled brat. The most successful were the performers playing Nancy and Sid. The women's voices in general were hard to understand, though this may have been the fault of the poor acoustics in the Pavilion. The orchestra almost saved the evening, with expressive and precise playing.
Written on Mar 05 2012Dull, uninspired kitsch. We left during intermission. I hate to see LA Opera putting such crap on the stage.
Written on Mar 05 2012Wonderful story, intriguing production, exquisite music. Be sure to attend Conlan's pre-performance talk.
Written on Mar 05 2012Catastrophy
Worst opera I have seen in my life
I think that it is time to change the opera director.
We need some new blood and programs
Written on Mar 05 2012Not the strongest outing from LA Opera ever.... The first half was crackling & delightful, but the 2nd half fell flat. Plot got a little movie-of-the-weekish....
Written on Feb 29 2012Very enjoyable, mild comic opera. Excellent cast and production, good orchestra seats. Needed the projected titles though, even if it was in English.
