Doma Theater Co. presents Songs for a New World, from composer Jason Robert Brown, creator of the acclaimed musicals 13 and Parade. This is Brown's first theatrical work, originally produced off-Broadway in 1995 and described by the composer as neither a musical nor a revue, but rather a "very theatrical song cycle." The series of songs are thematically connected, illustrating points of major decision in the characters' lives. The songs are performed by four cast members who play different characters throughout. The vocally demanding score is influenced by multiple genres, including pop, gospel, jazz and classical. Learn More

Beautiful use of the English language. The actors had a strong stage presence.Written on May 21 2007

Play had some good moments and I liked what it was going for but it didn't gel. The writer had an idea but didn't know where to take it or how to develop it into a meaningful whole. The volume could be taken down a few decibels - especially the Mr. Much character. His manicness and like of subtlety were wearing. Theater oversold tix so several people had to sit in the aisle.Written on May 18 2007

An overacted melodrama with no real sense of direction, and was not on the "Main Stage". Additionally the venue was run down and they did not even check for my Goldstar tickets. I was let in, but honestly I think anyone could have walked in just as easily off the street with no ticket and seen this show in all of its basement performance glory.Written on Apr 23 2007

More Information About American Midget
Description
Director Ben Kusler describes the new play "American Midget" this way: "The play centers on a typical, full-sized man who, after a series of significant events in his life, is visited by a mysterious agent who conspicuously refers to him as a 'midget.' As the play progresses, the man, Albert, starts to believe that he truly is a midget. Biting and heightened, the piece is a fast-paced ride full of outlandish characters, primarily centering on one man's sweetly naïve journey through Americana and his struggle to distinguish reality from delusion in a world far more outlandish, but only slightly more absurd, than our own."
Albert has an ambition of being a fine artist, but he encounters figures who try to dominate and thwart him. Can anything save him before his dreams are extinguished?
The playwright is Jonathan Yukich, a New Yorker whose plays have been seen in several American cities as well as in Canada, Australia and England. His previous works include "Edible Shoes", "Boiling People In My Coffee", and "Thank You, Twenty Thousand Pound Man". A partial list of his many honors received include the Kennedy Center's Paula Vogel Playwriting Award, the Alleyway Theatre Award, and the Wichita State University National Playwriting Award.
The cast of "American Midget" includes Eric Hailey, Parisa Fahkri, Dion Jackson, Tom Walz, Paige White, Piper Gunnarson and Derrick Cole.
Ben Kusler hails from Minnesota and graduated from Concordia College, where he went on to teach beginning directors. He also studied theatre in Greece, Italy, Czech Republic, France and London. Locally, he's been a director/actor at Granada Hills Dinner Theatre, Glendale Center Theatre, and the MET Theatre, where he directed the comedy "21A" last season.
"American Midget" is a comedy with big ideas along with its chuckles. Jonathan Yukich is a playwright with a unique comic voice with which to entertain you.
