An Adult Evening of Shel Silverstein at the Odyssey Theatre
Odyssey Theatre (Los Angeles, CA)
Rated 2.8 by 48 members who went.
Cartoonist, musician, poet, Grammy-winning songwriter, screenwriter and author of children's books, Silverstein was truly a renaissance sort of chap. Take a ride into this eclectic evening of comedy, song and risqué, often wacky, satire that so uncannily pinpoints the poignancy, absurdity and delightful comedy that is American life. Director Dan Bonnell puts it all together in an original and highly theatrical new mix of that which was Silverstein.

I didnt even realize this was not an event with Shel Silverstein... I was starting to feel dumb, is he even alive? If so, why did they advertize the event with him ? IT WAS just a bunch of skits that he wrote , I guess, we don't know?
All of the skits were boring, except for one funny one where they talk about breasts and penises.
I didn't like it, basically. Sorry.

I went to the theatre early, with a group of four. They only had one ticket, and made us wait till there were no shows for us to be seated. When we finally got our tickets, they sat the four of us at opposite ends of the theatre.
The play and actors were so-so.

I loved this show, & the wonderful performers. Of course, I am a Shel Silverstein fan (also, Edward Gory). My friend, however, did not "get it", and did not enjoy the show like me. He has never read Silverstein, so didn't really have a point of reference. Thank you, Goldstar, for making these tickets available to me......

Don't research it...just go!
The less you know about it, the more fun you will have.
Talented cast and theater personnel friendly and accomodating.
A very enjoyable evening.

This show is like a time capsule, full of reminders of how infatuated we were with angst and neurosis in the 60s and 70s. It could be overwhelmingly dark. But the acting is so good that you can suspend your 21st Century judgment and follow the players back into another time, where mental cruelty is funny. And in Shel Silverstein's hands, it is. Think Early Saturday Night Live meets Beckett. From the enthusiastic applause I was not alone in thinking this was a performance worth seeing.

it was very enjoyable! The cast is quite talented. I never knew that Shel Silverstein wrote any adult poems so this was something new.

Every one of the vignettes has some point that resonates with one or another member of the audience, but often these points are dark, even sinister, and, therefore, somewhat disturbing. Some parts are funny, but they always have an edge.

The acting was quite good, especially Colleen Kane, but some of the material was just crude and simply not funny. Prehaps a little "censoring" should have been applied.

Excellent standard of acting- be prepared for weird, funky and definitely "adult". Not a show for the kids or the grandparents!!

This show is definitely not for anyone under the age of 18. Rauchy, brawdy humor - delivered with bite and some explicitives. Real wonderful theatre with a very twisted look at us. Might offend some, but it most certainly entertained all and had many laughing.

It was quirky and different but entertaining and a fun evening out.
If you are or were a fan of Shel Silverstein, you may be surprised by the show! We were all very interested in the diversity of his abilities.
Don't bring the kids...or your parents!

This was a wonderful event! Something that was very enthralling and exciting! Never would have thought that Silverstein had that much humor in him for the adults.

It was funny, quirky and enjoyable, just like the Shel Silverstein I read to my son when he was younger...sort of.

More Details
A truly unique and multi-faceted artist, Shel Silverstein was a renowned poet, playwright, illustrator, screenwriter, and songwriter. Best known for his immensely popular children’s books including The Giving Tree, Falling Up, and A Light in the Attic, Silverstein has delighted tens of millions of readers around the world, becoming one of the most popular and best-loved children's authors of all time.
Born in Chicago on September 25, 1930, Sheldon Allan Silverstein grew up to attain an enormous public following, but always preferred to say little about himself. “When I was a kid,” he told Publishers Weekly in 1975, “I would much rather have been a good baseball player or a hit with the girls. But I couldn’t play ball. I couldn’t dance. So I started to draw and to write. I was lucky that I didn’t have anyone to copy, be impressed by. I had developed my own style.”
Since 1981, Silverstein has concentrated on writing plays for adults. One of his best known, /The Lady or the Tiger Show/ (1981), about a television producer who goes to unbelievable lengths to get his ratings up, has been performed on its own and in a group of one-acts entitled /Wild Life/ (1983). Silverstein has also collaborated on the screenplay /Things Change/ (1988) with playwright David Mamet.
Shel Silverstein died on 10 May 1999 from a heart attack.
