"Half the Sky" is not nearly enough room for the big, expressive sound of Vox Femina, the city's premier female chorus. Join the group as it completes its latest concert cycle with Half the Sky: Hear Our Voices at Zipper Concert Hall. Inspired by Half the Sky, a powerful book by Pulitzer winners Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn, the chorus has put together a stirring program of North American originals, from spirituals to rousing civil rights anthems. A few special pieces will be performed with the young women of Mira Costa High School -- the next generation of female singing talent. Finally, the women of Vox will give "voice" to their own experiences with an original commission: Acclaimed composer Jenni Brandon has set the words of individual chorus members to her moving composition "We Are Home." Share Vox Femina's passion for fairness as Dr. Iris Levine conducts Vox Femina through an exploration of the issues of equality and immigration.
Repertoire includes Pastures of Plenty/This Land is Your Land which
describes the travails and dignity of migrant workers in North America and was made famous by Woody Guthrie. The lyrics of Fences speak about how the universe was created without fences, and putting up borders between groups of people isn't the answer to stop immigration.
