No one knows what the Jewish Elders in Amsterdam said to Spinoza in 1656 to excommunicate him from the Jewish community, but David Ives' imaginative and thought provoking play paints the conflict between Spinoza's radical ideas and the oppressive religious doctrines of his times. In this eloquent and masterful drama, Ives attempts to open the temple doors and lets us listen in on a dispute whose philosophical and political echoes still reverberate today. The historical fiction examines the clash between religion that Jews, Christians and Muslims are still struggling to reconcile. Learn More

This show is so amazing. Literally one of the best pieces of theater I've ever seen. It's everything you could want it to be, it's funny, it's dramatic, there's movement, dance, music, singing, etc. It's so wonderful I've actually seen it three times. I highly recommend it to any Chekhov or non-Chekhov fan.

Description

Anton's Uncles is a fresh, funny, and physical look at Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya. In this new work, only the men remain, wrestling with their desires and pressed to examine a life unlived.

Anton's Uncles is the latest work from Theatre Movement Bazaar (TMB) co-founders, Kronis + Alger.  Theatre Movement Bazaar continues its unique remixing of literary classics with this new deconstruction of Anton Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya. Only the men remain from the cast of nine characters, wrestling with their desires and pressed to examine a life unlived. The text is a distillation of the original with new material added. The movement score emphasizes the unspoken, unseen and unexpressed for a fresh and physical impression of Chekhov’s classic.

Anton's Uncles was honored to be one of three productions invited to the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival national event in Washington, D.C. in April, 2010. This new work from TMB co-founders Tina Kronis and Richard Alger and was originally produced by Los Angeles City College Theatre Academy. This special engagement of Anton's Uncles is presented in honor of the 150th anniversary of Anton Chekhov’s birth. A special celebration will be held following the June 5th and June 13th performances.

24th Street Theatre has been co-producing with TMB for the last seven years. In that time 24th Street has collaborated with TMB’s Alger and Kronis on many projects at 24th Street Theatre and with other 24th Street partners such as The LA Philharmonic, The Colburn School of Performing Arts, and Inner City Arts. 24th Street/TMB have worked together on video projects, classes, Arts Ed performances and mainstage theatrical productions.
