Center Theatre Group's innovative new chamber musical explores the Southern California experience over the course of several decades through the eyes of a Mexican-American man growing up in Carlsbad and a San Diego woman whose chance encounters with Mexican immigrants mark the moments that define her life. Directed by multiple Tony-nominee Graciela Daniele, Los Otros stars Tony-winner Michelle Pawk (Hollywood Arms, Hairspray, Cabaret) and Broadway veteran Julio Monge (Twelfth Night, The Capeman, Fosse). Another pair of acclaimed Tony nominees, Ellen Fitzhugh (Paper Moon, Grind) and Michael John LaChiusa (The Wild Party), crafted the book, lyrics and score, highlighted by its intimate song cycles. Aunt Ester's house at 1839 Wylie Avenue is slated for demolition in a redevelopment project when a stranger, claiming ownership, shows up and begins to paint it. Meanwhile, the government considers whether to declare Pittsburgh's Hill District blighted and unleash federal money for its development. Harmond Wilks has a plan to propel inner city kids into the middle class, but will it come to fruition? Will he be successful in his bid to be the city's first black mayor? Infused by the spirits and dreams of generations past, Radio Golf is a powerful, contemporary play that completes Pulitzer Prize-winner and Tony Award-winner August Wilson's extraordinary 20th century cycle of the African-American experience.
Radio Golf celebrates not only this landmark event in American theatrical history, but the Mark Taper Forum's long relationship with August Wilson, most recently with the successful Gem of the Ocean, the play that begins the chronicle. Mr. Wilson was born and raised in the Hill District of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
