Award-winning theater company Rogue Machine performs the West Coast premiere of Daisy Foote's play, Bhutan, which debuted off-Broadway in 2006 to raves from the critics. Bhutan tells the story of a middle-class New England family and the upheaval they face after the death of their patriarch. Frances Conroy wonders how she ended up here. Her mother is driving her crazy. Her aunt is stalking a married man. Her brother is in prison. She dreams of the seemingly magical land of Bhutan, but can barely find the kitchen door.

With the Foote lineage, you know you're going to get a good story-and this delivers. But the impeccable acting is what is truly memorable here.

It was not as strong as the East Coast version. Strong acting. Could have moved along a bit faster. Overall good, not great.

Another hit from Rogue / Theatre/Theater! Wonderful acting, nice transition, excellent use of the set. I am considering season tickets to this theatre since everything they produce seems to be of the highest caliber.

Refreshments (including beer and wine) are available before the show at the snack bar. Ample street parking.

This is a very well-written play. If you love family dramas...with real humor and pathos, you'll love this!!! The acting is outstanding....both the older, more experienced actors, and the young actors were just great...well worth seeing just for the acting. Don't get to see acting like that very often.

Quotes & Highlights

  • “With Bhutan, Daisy Foote confirms both her formidable talent as an emerging playwright and determination to chronicle the evolutionary changes in the life cycle of a small town in rural New Hampshire. ... That she succeeds so well in this moving drama about the disintegration of a tightly knit working-class family attests to the compassion behind her steely-eyed vision.” --Variety
