Center Theatre Group's innovative new chamber musical explores the Southern California experience over the course of several decades through the eyes of a Mexican-American man growing up in Carlsbad and a San Diego woman whose chance encounters with Mexican immigrants mark the moments that define her life. Directed by multiple Tony-nominee Graciela Daniele, Los Otros stars Tony-winner Michelle Pawk (Hollywood Arms, Hairspray, Cabaret) and Broadway veteran Julio Monge (Twelfth Night, The Capeman, Fosse). Another pair of acclaimed Tony nominees, Ellen Fitzhugh (Paper Moon, Grind) and Michael John LaChiusa (The Wild Party), crafted the book, lyrics and score, highlighted by its intimate song cycles. Quotes & Highlights
- "The play is not about the experience of being deaf…the achievement is to tell a great story in a way that is not just accessible to all audiences but is more rich and more evocative, fresher and more exciting." Gordon Davidson, Artistic Director
Description
Powerful and majestic, the mighty Mississippi is the big river of Huck Finn and his adventures. It's the river that takes Huck and his friend Jim to the promise of freedom. Big River transforms Mark Twain's classic to the stage, blending music, voice, sign language and dance in an unforgettable journey. Huck, a deaf white boy who is free, and Jim, a hearing black man who is a slave, are worlds apart, yet they look out on the same starry sky and somehow, against all odds, form a powerful bond.
The original production of Big River won seven Tony Awards including Best Musical. This new acclaimed production, developed at Los Angeles' Deaf West Theatre, won five Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Awards and five Back Stage West Garland Awards, and recently was nominated for 11 Theatre LA Ovation awards including Best Musical. Big River continues the Taper's commitment to deaf and hard-of-hearing theater artists and audiences, begun in 1979 with the Tony Award-winning Children Of A Lesser God.
