Very short performance, and it was the BEIJING DANCE ACADEMY YOUTH DANCE COMPANY that performed according to the flyer/program, NOT "Beijing Dance Company" as advertised on Goldstar, which implies a world-class professional dance troupe. In other words, it was a bunch of students... It was kind of like watching a talent show at a school that had been given a big budget for props & sets, especially during the first half which consisted of six 5-minute routines. Also, the music used was often modern hip-hop or electronic beats, even with English vocals, and not traditional Chinese music as I would have expected. On the plus side, we got much better seats (7th row center) than had been expected.Written on Feb 15 2010

Fantastic show. There are two parts to it. The first segment is a series of 5 or 6 dances, each between 4 and 7 minutes long, designed to show off the different period style dances as well as the members of the dance company. The dancing was phenomenal and the costumes were really, really cool. I don't know why more women don't wear dresses with 10-foot long arms. I mean, I see how it would be impractical, but it's so beautiful. After the intermission they go into the Butterfly Lovers story. This is pretty short, only 25 minutes long, but it's a beautiful story. The male lead in particular was very emotional, and that combined with the story managed to bring my date to tears.Written on Feb 21 2010
Highly recommended as a date. Guys, she'll think you're cultured, even if you have the cultural depth of a bowl of miso soup.
Two other things...there's a restaurant nearby called Casa which we went to beforehand. It's a hip loungey bar/restaurant. The sangria was pretty tasty, the "sinfully spicy" shrimp tacos were very tasty but not sinfully spicy. It was a bit pricey too, $32 for a pitcher of sangria & the four tacos. But it wasn't crowded (although we were 10 minutes late to the show, so I don't know if it was a lot busy earlier). And once we were done with the show we walked down Grand, back towards Casa but on the other side of the road, and came across this really, really cool novelty store. Things we found: a popout book on the engineering of popout books; glass jars made to look like crumpled plastic bags; gold-plated binoculars; light-up cherry blossom branches. It was just cool so if you've got some time you might want to check it out.
