This was a wonderful night of theater performed with enormous enthusiasm and skill and directed, as far as I can tell, by a real master.

The playwright, Charles Mee, is (if you're not familiar) one of the only avant-garde playwrights whose works you'll see pretty consistently in New York (season at the Signature not too long ago) at the wealthier regional theaters (but not on their mainstage), and in any small village square where MFAs gather.

At one point, a character mentions a Jackson Pollack painting as a metaphor for a life well lived, and the structure of the play echoes that form. There's not a strong narrative in terms of protagonist etc, but rather vivid bursts of color through interconnected moments and genres.

So, staggeringly good direction by Annie Loui, a truly solid ensemble and several transcendent moments (emotional and intellectual) that were worth, in and of themselves, more than the entirety of many plays I've seen in L.A. in the past year (especially 'Dracula: House of Besarab', damn them).

Highly recommended.

My friend and I went with little understanding of what to expect. We were very pleasantly surprised and were both sad to see it end. Excellent. Very capable (and sexy, if that matters to you) cast. Recommended for sure.

Description

Cafe le Monde
A new work by Charles L. Mee
Directed by Annie Loui
Presented by the Ark Theatre Company

On Mee’s web site, the (re)making project, he says “There is no such thing as an original play ... these texts have often been taken from, or inspired by, other texts.”

The openness of Mee’s scripts do not allow for one authoritative interpretation. They are dependent upon the directors who interpret them. Cafe Le Monde combines music, interpretive dance pieces, and source material from other texts (ex. Ibsen, Ionesco, James Joyce) to create one unique theatrical experience.

A dozen tables. A sidewalk. Lovers and philosophers and sisters. A married couple having coffee. Street performers, human statues, dancers, opera singers. A world not of one plot line, one story, one narrative, but a landscape of multiple stories, vivid impressions, and total pleasure. Like life.
