Jill Charlotte Thomas' new play California Dreamin' explores the events leading up to the Manson family murders of 1969 and suggests a friendship between Charles Manson and coffee heiress and murder victim Abigail Folger. This alternative theory of what led up to the brutal attacks on 10050 Cielo Drive suggests that the killings may not have been entirely random, that the attackers may have known their victims and that there was a cover-up to protect Folger's reputation. MET Artistic Director L. Flint Esquerra directs the production.

Songs for a New World -- A Theatrical Song Cycle by Jason Robert Brown (13, Parade)

Full Price:
$30.00
Our Price:

Doma Theater Co. presents Songs for a New World, from composer Jason Robert Brown, creator of the acclaimed musicals 13 and Parade. This is Brown's first theatrical work, originally produced off-Broadway in 1995 and described by the composer as neither a musical nor a revue, but rather a "very theatrical song cycle." The series of songs are thematically connected, illustrating points of major decision in the characters' lives. The songs are performed by four cast members who play different characters throughout. The vocally demanding score is influenced by multiple genres, including pop, gospel, jazz and classical. Learn More

It was really good although the subject matter was a bit disturbing, especially for someone who grew up around the area during the 60's. A unique perspective of Manson is offered for consideration. The way the story unfolds using real possibilities based on the craziness of that era, shows how the social lines were fuzzy and anything could have happened. The plausibility of the story line is what makes it so fascinating.

the acting was solid but the production was very pedestrian. the subject matter should warrant a more bold approach.

I was glued to my seat during this entire show. Whether or not the premise of a Folger/Manson romance is true, I think it plants a seed in your imagination of that possibility. I was a friend of the house's owner until his death last year; he never mentioned anything such as this, although the author seems to intimate there are circumstances that might indicate that it was the case.Tyson Robert Turrow gave a chilling performance, I cannot imagine that anyone could have done it better. He pulled you into the character and made you feel you were actually watching & listening to Charles Manson's rants. In fact the whole cast was really really great, Ivy Khan is an excellent actress. I am recommending this show to everyone I know. Great theatre, with a thread of chilling reality woven in.
