This opera is based on the brief life and legacy of the young painter Charlotte Salomon. Much as Anne Frank kept her diary, Salomon chronicled her life and relationships by painting hundreds of watercolors, accompanied by an autobiographical narrative. Collectively, they are now recognized as one of the most extraordinary bodies of art to emerge from the violence of WWII.

Full Price:
$30.00
Our Price:

Doma Theater Co. presents Songs for a New World, from composer Jason Robert Brown, creator of the acclaimed musicals 13 and Parade. This is Brown's first theatrical work, originally produced off-Broadway in 1995 and described by the composer as neither a musical nor a revue, but rather a "very theatrical song cycle." The series of songs are thematically connected, illustrating points of major decision in the characters' lives. The songs are performed by four cast members who play different characters throughout. The vocally demanding score is influenced by multiple genres, including pop, gospel, jazz and classical. Learn More

Interesting interpretation of the life of Charlotte as a young Jewish woman painter that many of us probably didn't know that happened during the Nazi regime. The stage setup is creative and the lead vocals were great. It gets and sustains your attention throughout... and the theatre is cozy. But watch out for the steps getting up into your seat!

Description

This opera is based on the brief life and astonishing artistic legacy of the young painter Charlotte Salomon. Much as Anne Frank kept her remarkable diary, Salomon chronicled her life and relationships — joyful and sad — in a prolific burst of creativity. She painted hundreds of vibrant watercolors, accompanied by an autobiographical narrative. Collectively, they now are recognized as one of the most extraordinary bodies of art to emerge from the violence of World War II. In 1942, Salomon entrusted her work to a family friend, saying only, “Please take care of them. They are my entire life.” A year later, she was deported to Auschwitz, where she was killed immediately upon arrival.
