Songs for a New World -- A Theatrical Song Cycle by Jason Robert Brown (13, Parade)

- Our Price:

Doma Theater Co. presents Songs for a New World, from composer Jason Robert Brown, creator of the acclaimed musicals 13 and Parade. This is Brown's first theatrical work, originally produced off-Broadway in 1995 and described by the composer as neither a musical nor a revue, but rather a "very theatrical song cycle." The series of songs are thematically connected, illustrating points of major decision in the characters' lives. The songs are performed by four cast members who play different characters throughout. The vocally demanding score is influenced by multiple genres, including pop, gospel, jazz and classical. Learn More

Another fine performance at the Met. Strong voices all around, with perhaps the exception of the Arbiter. Memorable musical numbers: Nobody's Side, and One Night in Bangkok. Yes, finally a musical which leaves you still humming the tunes several days later.Orchestra will probably gain some needed cohesion as this show has added performances, but they said they put this together with only 14 rehearsals. And Reprise took this off their schedule this year? For shame. Place was packed. Recommended. And a quick shoutout to the woman in the front row who insisted on singing along with every song on the show, much to the consternation of the patrons behind her - Lady - you suck!Written on Aug 01 2010

Excellent leads vividly brought this neglected show to life. Extra brownie points to the entire cast for making the lyrics perfectly intelligible.Written on Aug 02 2010

Sorry to report that I was not as thrilled with this offering as some others. It was nice to hear the 8-piece orchestra, which is a real treat in a small production such as this. Even though it is billed as a concert, it was staged more like a performance, and staged quite well. However, the dancers upped the cheese factor, as they were completely out of place. Voices of the chorus were strong, and every actor had a microphone (wonderful!). With the principal characters, the "Russians" were quite strong in their acting and singing, but the "Americans" not so much. In fact, although the actress who played Florence has a nice voice, her songs were delivered pathos-free. The actor who played Freddy placed his voice so far up in his nasal cavity, that you could hardly decipher his lyrics. I sure did "Pity the Child" when he sang it, because he screamed his way through it until he finally cracked. Ouch.Written on Aug 27 2010

More Information About Chess in Concert
Description
Chess, originally a concept album recorded in 1984, generated a number of hit singles before the theatrical version hit the West End in 1986, where it played for three years.
The collaborators on Chess are giants of rock music and rock musicals. They have created a complex rock opera that played to full Broadway houses and standing ovations. Here, the ancient game becomes a metaphor for romantic rivalries, competitive gamesmanship, super power politics and international intrigues. The pawns in this drama form a love triangle: the loutish American chess star, the earnest Russian champion, and the Hungarian American female assistant. From Bangkok to Budapest the players, lovers, politicians, and spies are manipulated and manipulate to the pulse of a monumental rock score that includes “One Night In Bangkok” and “Heaven Help My Heart”.
