Two men, one an artist and the other a mysterious stranger, strike up a seemingly innocent conversation at a seaside resort. As they exchange increasingly intimate perspectives on art, marriage and women -- in particular, the artist's wife -- undercurrents of sexuality, language and economics explode into a tangled web of intrigue, suspicion and revenge in this gripping 19th-century psychological thriller. Deliciously dark and funny, this co-production with the New American Theatre of August Strindberg's Creditors is a story of vengeance, jealousy and psychological warfare that helped pave the way for modern Scandinavian noir. It tells an audience member everything she needs to know when she walks in on closing weekend and the theater is only 1/3 full. Word of mouth did not encourage folks to rush to see this production.
The problem was clearly the dull direction. The two actresses were more than adequate but the director forgot this is THEATER, not everyday life and the pace at which the dialogue proceeded was excruciatingly slow. 20 - 30 minutes could have been clipped if there had been tighter direction and the result would have been a more intense emotional experience. The writer could not have meant his work to be presented in this manner. During intermission, several people left. Enough said.
