Since I have never seen Sandra live this was a great show for me.
I really enjoyed her very varied talents. Having Stevie Nicks join her on stage was, for me, a highlight. She crafted that whole story very well. It was delightful and gave me a great story to tell about the concert.
We hope to see her again.
If I had a complaint it would be directed to the audience that seemed unable to sit down on time and without fanfare. It was like going to a show with 40 year old high school students. I was embarrassed to watch so many men behave as if they were the celebrity at the show. But they bought the tickets and that is the main thing.
An uneven show, but Sandra Bernhard still rocks. It was nice to revisit the past, this being the 20th anniversary of "Without You I'm Nothing," but the show didn't flow since she interspersed bits from the old with new material. I'd have preferred all new material, or seeing "Without You" in its entirety.
I'm a brand-new convert to the Church of the Divine Sarah, and this performance was what converted me! I knew her from her appearances in movies and on talk shows, and always thought of her primarily as a comedian - I had no idea that so much of her act was musical. And WHAT music!
Sandra Bernhard may not have the "prettiest"-sounding voice in the world, but she makes up for that with sheer power, gutsiness, and an ability to "interpret" songs that puts her in a class with Bette Midler or Frank Sinatra. In fact, she reminds me strongly of Bette Midler's work back in the '70s, when Bette was still all raw and dangerous and "rock 'n' roll," before she became the Grand Lady of Stage & Screen that she is today. Bette may have mellowed into a cabaret singer, but Sandra is still 100% rock 'n' roll.
I was most amazed at Sandra Bernhard's ability to perform intimate, wrenching cabaret numbers as if they were heavy metal anthems - AND vice versa - and to pull off the trick brilliantly in both directions!
Her comedy is also as fantastic as ever, with her unique perspective on every form of pop culture. But the music was the real revelation for me.
I had seen the original "Without You I'm Nothing" in its off-Broadway run at none other than the ORPHEUM theater on Second Ave. in NYC back in 1987. What was wonderful about this particular incarnation is the way she managed to seamlessly marry the older material (still perfectly relevant and hysterical) with completely new stuff that hit hard and fast. And there is nobody that knows how to make an entrance (or exit for that matter) like Miss Sandy! The theater was on FIRE!!!!
Sandra was rock solid, peforming for over two hours, transitioning between new material and the old faves from the Without You I'm Nothing. She seemed energized and in the moment every second, keeping me laughing and smiling the entire evening. I was surprised to see her working off notes but that didn't seem to slow her down or create any lag in her performance. Her unexpected riffing with Natalie Maines was a treat. I'd go back again if she was doing a standing engagement.
Ms. Bernhard is always brilliant and she was especially sharp at the Orpheum. And that voice! Beautiful and powerful.
As a bonus, Dixie Chick Natalie Maines came on stage and did a little singing with Ms. Bernhard.

For 25 years, Sandra Bernhard has been challenging fans and critics with her knife-edged humor, satire and emotive performances on film, television and stage. “An Evening with Sandra Bernhard” includes comedy, commentary and music, and Bernhard appears with musical director/pianist, Mitch Kaplan and guitarist Pam Adams. The SF Weekly praised Bernhard, “One moment, her voice is lulling you into a wistful sigh; the next, she's knocking you back several rows with it.” Bernhard's last show, “Hero Worship,” featured a five-piece band and was a post-September 11th tribute to Bernhard's commitment to irony—that it, too, has survived September 11th. The show featured a range of musical numbers (some original and some covers). It was a fearless attempt to show that life must continue and the show must go on. Other notable performances include her participation in the “Stormy Weather Benefit '98,” organized by Don Henley, which also featured Stevie Nicks and Joni Mitchell, as well as “The Elton John Tribute for Broadway Cares.” Her critically acclaimed 1998, one-woman Broadway hit, “I’m Still Here...Damn It!” which played the Booth Theater, had critics raving. Created and conceived by Bernhard, the show first ran for five months off-Broadway at New York’s Westbeth Theatre, where it garnered ecstatic reviews. The New York Times called Bernhard’s performance: “An angst driven, foul-mouthed poison-laced joy ride that banks and careens frenetically through the worlds of fashion, celebrity, rock, and religion … In her own voice, unfiltered, [Bernhard is a living, breathing bonfire.” The show went on to play sold-out runs in Boston and San Francisco, and one of the Bay Area performances was filmed for an HBO special (“I’m Still Here…Damn It!” which aired in the summer of 1998) photographed by cinematographer Haskel Wexler, and produced and directed by Marty Callner. Since her first film accolades in 1983 in Martin Scorseses’, “The King of Comedy” featuring Jerry Lewis and Robert De Niro, Bernhard has since appeared in numerous films including “Inside Monkey Zetterland,” “Hudson Hawk” and more recently, “Dinner Rush.” Throughout her career, Bernhard’s formidable presence has also had a place on television. From 1991-1996, she portrayed Nancy on “Roseanne,” and has had guest starring roles on “Ally McBeal,” “Chicago Hope” and “Will & Grace.” She has appeared on “Late Night with David Letterman,” as well as “The Tonight Show,” “Rosie O’Donnell” and “The View.” She hosted the season premiere of “MadTV” and the Bravo network recently profiled her career. In 2001, Bernhard hosted her own talk show, “The Sandra Bernhard Experience” for A&E television. Along with writing for performance, Bernhard has put her musings into book form. Currently working on her fourth collection, her books, just as her shows, are full of personal insights, introspective rants, prose and essays. She made her publishing debut in 1987 with “Confessions of a Pretty Lady” and followed that up with “Love, Love, and Love.” Her third book, “May I Kiss You on the Lips, Miss Sandra?” was published in 1998, prior to her Broadway run. Her work has also been published in numerous magazines, including The New Yorker, Vanity Fair, Conde Nast Traveler, Rolling Stone, Interview, Spy, Elle and Allure.
