A fantastic play with complicated plot and multiple climaxes to engage the audiance.Written on Jun 16 2008
Wonderful cast and solid performance. impressive portrait of how actors grew from not knowing how to act to a
the main character's internal struggle and growth/survival thru the up and downs of the time.
the last scene is so emotional.
a very rare and creative portrait of the 1600s theatre life that is not just a 90% copy of original Shakespeare's play.

I'd have appreciated some warning about the overtly bawdy nature of the show. It wasn't so appropriate for my young teens on their 13th birthday! Other than that, it was well done.Written on May 26 2008

I really wanted to like this play. The concept and story were intriguing. Production, however, was not first rate. I did enjoy much of it, though. Highlights included the wild haired, cockney singer-violinist who gave the pre-show announcements; the believable and touching seduction scene between Kynaston and the seamstress; the "ultimate" death scene from "Othello" between Kynaston and Hughes, very well performed (and clever -- you'll see). So, actually, though I didn't love it, I guess I did like it.Written on May 19 2008

Description

When women were men…on the stages of England, Edward Kynaston reigned as the most celebrated leading lady. His exquisite portrayals of Shakespeare’s famous females brought him celebrity and love at the start of the Restoration. Then, a real woman named Margaret Hughes stepped on stage to steal his glory. King Charles II decreed a new law and Kynaston’s splendor soon changed to squalor. His livelihood and self image wavered on the brink of destruction until…revenge and a stunning turn of events persuaded him to take the stage once more.
