Taking a moving leap into Black History Month, Lula Washington Dance Theatre will grace Los Angeles with its soul searching event, Reflections in Black. In this two day concert series, Lula's exceptional dancers take audience members on a captivating journey through the Civil Rights Movement of the sixties in Washington's new piece, The Movement. A tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., this work will be coupled with Donald McKayle's, I've Known Rivers to retell the African American experience through dance.

<p>Fresh from its east coast tour, the high energy Lula Washington Dance Theatre will grace Los Angeles with two evenings of breathtaking dance at the Nate Holden Performing Arts Center.  </p> <p>The performances are in recognition of African-American Heritage Month and are being sponsored by the Southern California Gas Company and the Los Angeles City Department of Cultural Affairs.</p> <p>Featuring excerpts from their well-received southern and eastern tour, the show will include Donald McKayle’s “Songs of the Disinherited,” Tamica Washington-Miller’s “Thanks and Praises,” and Lula Washington ’s new work “The Movement”—a tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr; and Rosa Parks.  </p> <p>The dance company will be joined at the Saturday matinee by Lula Washington’s critically acclaimed Youth Dance Ensemble, which will perform soul stirring pieces from their repertory including their gospel suite and their African celebration dance, Dounba. The youth dancers will also offer a tap dance tribute to tap legend Fayard Nicholas, who recently died at age 92.</p> <p>This concert comes on the heels of the dance company’s recent touring season, which energized audiences in New York City, Hilton Head South Carolina; North Charleston, South Carolina; and Durham North Carolina .  </p> <p>Operating for a quarter century surrounded by the bright lights of Hollywood , Lula Washington has created her own light, becoming one of the most successful dance company leaders in the West.  “There is something on this show for everybody,” says Lula Washington of the performances, which will kick off African American Heritage Month for many audience members.  </p> The 26-year-old company will continue its legacy of excellence in dance by igniting the stage with an electric blend of jazz, African, ballet and modern dance choreography that entertains but also enlightens audiences about social and political issues impacting the black community and the world.
