Actress, dancer and choreographer Debbie Allen, with the Debbie Allen Dance Academy, presents The Hot Chocolate Nutcracker. Allen gave the traditional holiday favorite a rich new cultural context and fresh characters, and multiple-Grammy-winner Mariah Carey contributed to the score. After young Kara receives a nutcracker filled with hot chocolate, she falls asleep and journeys to enchanted lands, including Candy Cane Lane, Egypt, the Rainforest, Jazzland, Russia and the Land of the Kimono Dolls. Little ones will have no trouble following along thanks to the narration by by three wisecracking mice: Harvey, Schmink and Buckey. Allen herself appears in this fun holiday fare.

There were some really wonderful moments, such as the Fairy Queen dances, the Bollywood dance and the Candy Cane Boys. Overall though, the show wasn't as tight as I expected it to be. It was very hard to understand the three mice, in fact they were often too screechy for the ear. Also some of the pieces weren't very together. I must say though that Debbie Allen has done wonderful work with these kids and I support her admirable dedication and passion for her school.Written on Dec 09 2011
