Based on Sophocles' Electra, Luis Alfaro's Electricidad crackles with intensity and sly humor as it transforms a 2400-year-old text into a vibrant and unforgettable myth for the modern age. See the West Coast premiere of this thoroughly modern tragedy at the Mark Taper Forum.

Center Theatre Group's innovative new musical explores the Southern California experience over the course of several decades through the eyes of a Mexican-American man growing up in Carlsbad and a San Diego woman whose chance encounters with Mexican immigrants mark the moments that define her life. Directed by multiple Tony-nominee Graciela Daniele, Los Otros stars Tony-winner Michelle Pawk (Hollywood Arms, Hairspray, Cabaret) and Broadway veteran Julio Monge (Twelfth Night, The Capeman, Fosse). Horrible production! Too much spanish dialogue overall, I needed to be bilingual to fully understand what the actors were saying. The three women in the cast talked entirely to quickly throughout the show. Plot was very predictable, could have been done in the first 10 minutes.

A great play about power struggles, culture and machismo effects on society over all. This play speaks of attempts at breaking cycles while falling prey to them at the same time. Every actor on that stage was top notch, capturing one of Los Angeles' sub-cultures to the T. As my great uncle would have said, "Echale!"

Funny, dark and ultimately moving. This modern interpretation plays very much like the Greek tragedy on which it is based. You don't have to live in East Los Angeles to understand the context of ELECTRICIDAD and feel its lasting impression after you exit the theatre.

  • "The great tale of revenge and matricide is given a Latino slant in Electricidad...besides tagging onto a ripping-good story, Alfaro opens a window onto the look, symbols, language, and attitudes of cholo/chola culture." Theater Mania

Description

In a Los Angeles barrio, the hum of a live wire is heard, electricity pulsing through a transformer box. The same power runs through the body of Electricidad, driven by the all-consuming passions of loyalty and vengeance. High tension and electrical spark and hiss are ever-present in this mesmerizing transformation of Sophocles' Greek classic Electra as it takes a contemporary look at the power and consequences of revenge and its effects on family and community.
