Where do ideas come from? How is the artistic process born? The multimedia show Synesthesia tries to tackle those questions with a game of "creative telephone.", in which eight artists working in different genres work together to inspire each other. The first artist was asked to select a fortune cookie and given two weeks to create a piece based on the fortune. The next artist will see that creation and then must design his own pieces, and so on, until this show, which will be an evening of their work performed live, in sequence, providing a unique glimpse into the creative minds of these gifted artists. ...I read and ignored the prior reviews on goldstar that the music was not memorable and that it was too long...moral of this story...do not ignore the reviews...this production is an exercise in self delusion...if you can make the songs sound important then they will be...NOT...my compliments to the cast for trying to make this work but I just can't recommend this show to anyone...

What a great experience!! Thought this is a small theater, this is a first rate production of a new rock opera that really rocks. Terrific songs and an energetic cast that knows that they are in someting special, this will have a long, long life after it leaves its humble beginnings. You should go and see this so that later, you can brag you saw it at the very beginning. A true American icon gets the red carpet treatment (flaws and all).

With this show you pretty much get what you'd expect. It's fun and entertaining, but it's not on the par with other musicals I've seen. The lead guy has a great high pitched 70's rocker voice. The other singers are hit and miss. The black lady reporter (sorry, can't remember character name) was the best.

The problem is that the story isn't all that great. In concept, it could be a great story, but as it is, it's a bit flat. I mean, there's nothing that is hilariously funny, extremely exciting, or very moving. The poignant scenes miss the mark 'cause the story doesn't allow you to get really invested in the characters.

Also, the songs themselves are nothing special. The best song in the show is a "gospel-ish" number. Otherwise, the songs just don't have any type of catchy melody. I mean the best musicals, Rock Opera or otherwise, you walk away from singing at least one song from the show for several days later. With Evel, 10 minutes after it ended I couldn't recall a particular tune/melody. Many times too the songs are just people singing dialogue as opposed to well-written songs that work in or out of the context of the show itself.

On the positive, it was really cool the way they incorporated actual footage of Evel from back in the day, and it was nostalgic just to see his story protrayed 'cause I actually owned one of the wind up toys they talk about during the show.

If you were born before '75, you'll probably have fun just reliving the Evel days, but as a stand alone show, I couldn't recommend it.

With an excitable, fun cast including the GORGEOUS & very talented Traci Dinwiddie (Linda Knievel) - this production ROCKS! The costuming was creative and the energy from all characters and the band made me sit straight up in my seat & bounce with the tunes with a BIG smile on my face! It was truly a FUN time!
I applaud all involved!

Description

Evel Knievel The Rock Opera, an explosive new production, brings the iconic daredevil’s life to the musical stage for the first time. The story and original music, written and performed by award-winning composer Jef Bek, is reminiscent of 1970s classic rock, and follows Evel on his journey from his struggling days as a copper miner in Butte, Montana, to his triumphant arrival on the world stage as “the Greatest Motorcycle Daredevil of All Time.”

Bek began writing the show right after September 11, 2001, feeling the need to recall a time when a self-made man restored patriotism to a country embroiled in war. Bek flew to Clearwater, Florida, in 2003 to meet with Knievel and play him his seven-song demo. Reports of the exclusive deal struck between Knievel and Bek made worldwide news. "I think it's a wonderful compliment," Knievel told the Los Angeles Times.

Director Keythe Farley is an active member of the Actors' Gang, a 25-year old theater company located in Culver City, California, and has created works presented nationally. Farley wrote, produced and/or voice-directed episodes of "Rugrats," "As Told by Ginger" and "The Wild Thornberries," and the innovative Batboy: The Musical (with co-authors Brian Flemming and Laurence O'Keefe; recipient of the 2001 Outer Critics Circle and Lucille Lortel Awards for Best Off-Broadway Musical). Farley is a graduate of UCLA.

Writer, composer and performer Jef Bek was a founding member of both John Cusack’s New Crime Productions in Chicago and Zoo District Theater in downtown Los Angeles. Bek has received Ovation (2), LA Weekly (2), and Garland (3) Awards for Zoo District productions throughout Los Angeles, including Nosferatu, Pathe X, The Master and Margarita, and Scenes from an Execution.

The live rock band for Evel Knievel: The Rock Opera consists of Jef Bek on drums, Jay Dover on guitar, Gabe Baldazzi on keyboards and Rick Zaccaro on bass.
