A star-studded, talented team brings the hit bio musical FELA! to the Ahmanson Theatre. Directed and choreographed by Tony winner Bill T. Jones (Spring Awakening) and produced by Shawn "Jay-Z" Carter, Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, FELA! brings a high-energy mix of dance, theater and music to tell the true-life story of the legendary Nigerian musician Fela Kuti. Using Kuti's pioneering music -- a blend of jazz, funk and African rhythm and harmonies -- FELA! explores Kuti's controversial life as an artist, political activist and revolutionary musician.

Sondheim's Follies: Tony-Winning Broadway Hit at the Ahmanson

Full Price:
$95.00 - $110.00
Our Price:
$47.50 - $55.00

The Kennedy Center's critically-acclaimed Broadway production of Stephen Sondheim's classic musical Follies, currently nominated for eight 2012 Tony Awards, comes to the Ahmanson Theatre, where it's receiving equally stellar reviews. It's the haunting story of two troubled couples who reunite at the decrepit theater where the ladies once performed, facing the ghosts of the past and the harsh reality of the present. Featuring a memorable score by Sondheim, including such enduring songs as "Broadway Baby," "Losing My Mind" and "I'm Still Here," the show is also a riveting look at the deterioration of the American dream -- a crack in the plaster of the gilded age of Broadway. Director Eric Schaeffer is joined by much of his original cast -- with 41 performers, it's one of the largest ever on this stage -- as well as a 28-piece orchestra. Tony Award-winner Victoria Clark joins the production, while reprising their roles from the New York show are 2012 Tony nominees Jan Maxwell, Danny Burstein and Ron Raines. Learn More

Maybe I was expecting too much. The music is good (I went because already know and love Fela and Femi's music) and the dancing very energetic, but the story - while about an important figure - is quite simple and so needed to be told in a much more dramatic way. We left at the interval because it was already too much of the same. Also, I thought it was quite hypocritical to ignore the white band members who were actually playing all of the intense and great sax and horn solos which were made to appear to be played by the lead actor - no glossy bios (which even the general cast get), no intros, no spotlights. I hope they at least waved an arm at the band during the curtain call - but that's not the same.

Simply fantastic! What an amazing, energetic evening. This show is not perfect, but it is immensely entertaining and educational. I knew nothing of Fela Kuti before seeing this show, and now I don't know how I went so many years without realizing what an innovator he was. The show is filled with some of the best dancers/musicians/dancers you will ever see together on one stage, and learning about this musician/revolutionary will inspire you. A must-see.
