- Our Price:
- $40.00
The final musical collaboration by the legendary theater team of John Kander and Fred Ebb (Chicago, Cabaret and Kiss of the Spider Woman) comes to Los Angeles for a run at the Ahmanson Theatre. This surprising and inspiring story is based on the Scottsboro case from the '30s concerning nine young African-American men who were unjustly accused of a shocking crime and whose story would eventually contribute to the Civil Rights Movement. The Scottsboro Boys is told through a mix of innovative staging and piercing songs, and garnered 12 Tony Award nominations. This production is directed and choreographed by five-time Tony Award winner Susan Stroman (The Producers). Learn More

view more less of this reviewThis is one of the most powerfully entertaining and informative theatrical performances that we have experienced EVER! The staging was superb; the acting incredible; the music exhilarating; the dancing hypnotic; and the grounding in historical/cultural perspectives profound!
This is a must see for understanding the compelling influence of music and dance for activating social movements. Be prepared to participate in the movement at the Shrine - leave your inhibitions at home!
star this review starred report as inappropriateMaybe I was expecting too much. The music is good (I went because already know and love Fela and Femi's music) and the dancing very energetic, but the story - while about an important figure - is quite simple and so needed to be told in a much more dramatic way. We left at the interval because it was already too much of the same. Also, I thought it was quite hypocritical to ignore the white band members who were actually playing all of the intense and great sax and horn solos which were made to appear to be played by the lead actor - no glossy bios (which even the general cast get), no intros, no spotlights. I hope they at least waved an arm at the band during the curtain call - but that's not the same.

star this review starred report as inappropriateWe came as skeptics, being longtime Fela Kuti fans. So, after the first few minutes it felt very strange indeed- sitting in this fancy theatre in comfortable seats consuming a product from the uber-commercial Broadway/Hollywood axis. Soon however, despite some shortcomings, it was clear that this event- about a figure who died many years ago- has remarkable resonance in our immediate here and now. Sure, Fela's music will live forever, that is certain. However, the developing journey of his life story and the passion of his message is NOW NOW NOW. A very forceful delineation of the momentous 99 vs 1% struggle currently evolving.
It is an outstanding and unique musical show. Powerhouse performances, especially from Sahr Ngaujah who delivers one of the most electrifying performances I've ever witnessed in decades of theatregoing.
Not the clearest storytelling and a bit simple in its "message" (given the complexities of Nigerian and African politics and social condition)- but that is not its mission. It blows away most criticism with energy and unforgettable music and heart and soul.
Those who prefer or expect something like the latest revival of "My Fair Lady" should probably keep away. Those who also appreciate "My Fair Lady" and maintain open minds will be blown away. Important to maintain an open and fair mind not only about theatrical events but more importantly the world around us- all of it.
There were many empty seats after the interval - in truth, mostly blue heads and preoccupied yuppies we noticed. Maybe they were the 1%. BTW I'm a 60 year old geezer myself, just for the record.
Don't miss it.
