Directed by multiple Tony-nominee Graciela Daniele, Los Otros stars Tony-winner Michelle Pawk (Hollywood Arms, Hairspray, Cabaret) and Broadway veteran Julio Monge (Twelfth Night, The Capeman, Fosse). Quotes & Highlights
- "August was a poet before he became a playwright, and poetry is still part of the language his characters speak. You don't always hear people talk like that in real life, but you wish you could." James Earl Jones in Time Magazine
Description
August Wilson's Gem of the Ocean is one of ten plays, each set in a different decade of the 20th century, which together chronicle 100 years of the African-American experience. Set in 1904 Pittsburgh, Gem of the Ocean is the chronological first panel of the series.
Citizen Barlow, in spiritual turmoil, arrives at Aunt Ester's house seeking her counsel and claiming sanctuary from Caesar, the local constable. Aunt Ester, now 285 years old, takes him on a journey of self-discovery to the City of Bones, a half-mile by half-mile city in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. The journey sets into motion a series of events, leading to startling discoveries and setting Citizen Barlow on a course where duty leads to redemption.
Two-time winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, August Wilson begins his extraordinary decade-by-decade chronicle of the African-American experience, told through the soaring, lyrical poetry of a master storyteller.
