Doma Theater Co. presents Songs for a New World, from composer Jason Robert Brown, creator of the acclaimed musicals 13 and Parade. This is Brown's first theatrical work, originally produced off-Broadway in 1995 and described by the composer as neither a musical nor a revue, but rather a "very theatrical song cycle." The series of songs are thematically connected, illustrating points of major decision in the characters' lives. The songs are performed by four cast members who play different characters throughout. The vocally demanding score is influenced by multiple genres, including pop, gospel, jazz and classical. Learn More

Wonderful performance of a difficult and very timely play; all-round stellar cast with some really stand-out performers (The Maid, Dulois, Cauchon), who deserve a much bigger audience; see Saint Joan & spread the word!

This production of George Bernard Shaw's "Saint Joan" was more than excellent. I was not alone among audience viewers who found it to be spectacular. Most of the audience waited long after the performance to meet and congratulate the Director and actors who did such a superlative job. The props were nearly non-existent, but it not matter for the quality of acting more than made up for it. I do not have my playbill here as I write, but the actress who played Joan, Dawn, was able to take you into the psyche of the young Joan in a way that gave the viewer an emotional experience which left one with an experience that will never be forgotten. For me it was a divine connection. She does not even have an agent! But for certain, her name will be in lights in the future. Many of us agreed that this production should be at the Ahmanson. And the Director, John, also superbly gifted, was humble about his giftedness. I pray some great talent scouts and agents will make their way to this performance and that the publicity to promote this production of this play will be adequately dispersed so that LA classic theatre goers will be able to know of it and get to see it within the next 4 weeks. They will be so grateful for the privilege. Marianne

Very strong acting throughout; imaginative staging; Shaw's text is a thing of its period, where self-determination of minority populations in Europe was a League of Nations mandate -- Joan's sermon that each "people" is separate and distinct and should remain where God placed it sound today xenophobic. The hagiography of Shaw's play about Joan, in the face of conniving, self-serving poltical men is too pat for modern audiences.

More Information About George Bernard Shaw's Saint Joan

Description

George Bernard Shaw’s Saint Joan is a tempestuous retelling of the mighty tale of Joan of Arc, the young girl who led the armies of King Charles of France against the British occupiers and their collaborators in the great wars of the 1400s in France. Believing she is chosen by God, Joan rallies her armies to victory until she is finally taken by the Burundians and sold to the British to go to trial for sorcery and heresy. Listening only to the voices of her beloved Saints, Joan stands against the bureaucracy of the Holy Inquisition of the Catholic Church, confessing, and then recanting her guilt as a heretic just before she is put to the flames.
