The final musical collaboration by the legendary theater team of John Kander and Fred Ebb (Chicago, Cabaret and Kiss of the Spider Woman) comes to Los Angeles for a run at the Ahmanson Theatre. This surprising and inspiring story is based on the Scottsboro case from the '30s concerning nine young African-American men who were unjustly accused of a shocking crime and whose story would eventually contribute to the Civil Rights Movement. The Scottsboro Boys is told through a mix of innovative staging and piercing songs, and garnered 12 Tony Award nominations. This production is directed and choreographed by five-time Tony Award winner Susan Stroman (The Producers). Learn More

Written on Oct 12 2012Great show!!! Bought these tickets to go with a friend and our teenage sons. Perfect after dinner outing. Not apropriate for children under the teenage years.
Written on Jul 09 2012This is was a great musical. Not meant for kids under 15yrs old. There is a graphic bed scene. Other than that, it was cool to hear all the music.
Written on Jul 02 2012Simulated sex scenes on stage made me a little uncomfortable since my 12 yr-old son was right next to me! I expected the F-bombs but not the sex... The performance was great and the singing spot on!
Written on Jun 29 2012I imagine this show makes more sense for people that are better familairized with the source material than I am. The cast's performances were great; however, I found it a bit daunting to follow the story as there was barely any dialog to establish what was going on for the less initiated (at least that was my experience). My daughter seemd to quite enjoy the show and definitely had a better grasp of the story and characters (she is a Green Day fan). Did I enjoy myself? Yes (but more for sharing the experience with my daughter). Would I go again? Probably not (I'd much rather go see Jesus Christ Superstar again). The music, singing, dancing and use of the set were all great but I feel this show is better suited for Green Day fans over a general musical audience.
Written on May 28 2012More than I expected, still ranting and raving, and pleased I was able to catch the show on the last showing. What was there not to love? Emotionally charged, eye opening, and it was all supported by an album that I love! Green Day's American Idiot changed my perspective on who the "American Idiot" actually is: it is YOU AND ME!
Being a musical and at a theater, I dressed in my best theater wear. For those who have been to a theater showing, it is a classy and sophisticated occasion. I was shocked to see that many people look like they were going to a concert. The majority of attendees were dressed in black, sneakers, and had radical hair style and colors. Although shocked at the lack of effort the majority put into their day-wear, I was moved by the effect that such a powerful mainstream band like Green Day had on the majority: they were mostly young kids and teenagers. I believe that our youth misses out on the arts such as theater performances so to have seen Green Day bring awareness to the youth about the theater touched me.
If it comes through your town - do yourself a favor and go see it.
Written on May 04 2012If you don't know/like the Green Day Album, it will be dificult to like this show.
Written on Apr 26 2012We enjoyed this event very much. Of course we loved the music!! We are great fans of Green Day. Took the Metro this time, but it took an hour to get there from North Hollywood, next time will try the parking. Eat and drink before you enter, many thing overpriced.
Written on Apr 26 2012show was great fun.
Written on Apr 25 2012The choreography was amazing, but I thought the singing was just average (below what I would expect from Broadway performers). Perhaps I just could not adjust to hear anyone but Green Day perform these songs. (The seats were great, though, and we got them for half price through Goldstar, so overall we were happy with the experience)
Written on Apr 24 2012Terrific show. I recommend you go and see it. Seats were great. Had a perfect view of the stage.
Written on Apr 24 2012The stage and production quality were excellent. A very entertaining 90 minutes. Great deal for these seats.
Written on Apr 24 2012Music was fantastic! Our seats were much better than OVO. I was worried about the seating but pleasantly surprised. Thank you. We truly enjoyed it all!
Written on Apr 23 2012Show was great! Semi-GreenDay tribute band like, but still a fun show to watch
Written on Apr 23 2012Amazing level of energy from the performers. Great music obviously. The storyline is a little narrow but it's well explored through the 3 male leads. Wish women could end up being more than extraordinary or whatshername but kudos to the actresses who play these roles with such vivacity.
Written on Apr 23 2012Loud, sexy, fun and with a great message.
Written on Apr 23 2012I thought American Idiot was fresh and exciting and I felt like I knew every song, even though I didn't. The set design was very effective and eye-catching without being distracting. The cast was tremendous with everyone getting at least a moment to shine in the spotlight. I would highly recommend this while it is in LA for its last week!
Written on Apr 23 2012This musical was a lot of fun! It was heavy on the music and pretty light on the storyline and dialogue, but I guess that's what you'd expect from a musical that is using Green Day songs we all know and love.
Written on Apr 23 2012Loved this show! I took my 21 year old daughter and we both had a great time.
Written on Apr 22 2012I've been hearing about this show for years now, and figured this would be a perfect opportunity to experience it for myself, and I'm not disappointed that I did. The subject matter is fairly dark but easy to follow and understand without much talking at all. Some of the visuals are heart-wrenching that go right to your core. Music was great, the band is right on the stage the entire time, the singers were great, too. Loud. It's pretty darned loud, but it is Rock, so no shock there. I'd recommend anyone, particularly if you're a GreenDay fan, attend. Certainly worth the price that Goldstar offers!
Be advised to use the restroom before entering, there is no intermission, which I appreciated.
Written on Apr 21 2012Fantastic Show! Once again, Goldstar delivers --- great seats at a great price!
Written on Apr 21 2012What can I say, I knew I'd love this show since the day I heard about it and it didn't disappoint!!! I saw the show once before, but I wasn't the one who bought the tickets. This time, I got them and am happy to report that we had an incredible night!!! The show was great. From the lighting to the staging to the singing to the dancing to the set design to the theater itself, this show was fantastic!!! I was worried because the cast did so well on March 17 that I was afraid that they wouldn't live up to that show (because they're a touring cast with a lot on their plate, they have to be exhausted by this point). The cast was flawless. My friends and I have a tendency to pick out the 'weakest links' and we couldn't for this show, Everyone was so spot on and flawless!!!
I read a previous review likening this show to a modern-day Hair, so naturally (being the obsessed Hair fan that I am), I read the review. I agree, for the most part, but I also see the similarities as a positive rather than a negative. Yes, there are striking similarities between the two; sex, drugs, angst, anxiety, profanity, anger, joy, exaltation, and good music. You've got Viet Nam in Hair replaced by the Iraq war in American Idiot. Claude is Tunny, Berger is the Jesus of Suburbia. Sheila Franklin is a mix of the Extraordinary Girl and Whatsername. It's a modern-day hair for the punk rock crowd and I couldn't be happier.
If you liked the lighting and set design in Spring Awakening, you'll love this show. If you like Hair, you'll like this show. If you're a Green Day fan, you'll like this show.I caught wind of a conversation outside fo the theater that made me smile. Two old ladies (had to be in their 70s or above) were talking about American Idiot and Spring Awakening. To my surprise, they enjoyed both shows but found the music of American Idiot making them hum along and tap their feet. I didn't hear any negatives coming from the pair, only excitement and praise for something new and unconventional (though the unconventional is becoming conventional these days, and I support it).
Written on Apr 20 2012The show was brilliant. From reading other reviews, I expected it to be difficult to follow. That was not my experience. It is a Rent - like coming of age story of 3 young men who take separate paths in the young lives. As each story unfolds, the music, scenery and dance entertain and illuminate the stage. We loved the show and it made me both long for my youth as well as feel grateful I survived those tumultuous years without the hardships these 3 men faced. Our Goldstar tickets were waiting at will call and we had no problems at all. I wished the seats had been a little better, though at this particular theater all the seats are stadium stacked so you can see from just about anywhere.
Written on Apr 20 2012The show was so good!! The singing sounded just like listen to a Green Day track! I found it very interesting how they managed to put together this entire show all from lyrics of the Green Day songs. A great performance, the dance was perfect! A lot of enthusiasm and a great atmosphere!
Written on Apr 20 2012Superbe show..Moves all the time, in several directions..Well put together, would like to see it again to understand all of it, your attention is needed so many places at all time..Full of energy ..Full of young talents..
Written on Apr 20 2012Show is powerful, exciting, real!! Wakes you up!
Written on Apr 20 2012Wonderful cast and great live band performing the Green Day songs. Thoroughly enjoyed it!
Written on Apr 20 2012Awesome, talented cast. Enjoyed the show & music so much, I went 2x!
Written on Apr 20 2012If you like Green Day's music you will
like it. Lots of positive energy.
Very enjoyable
Written on Apr 20 2012Although i am not the largest Green Day fan, i thought this show was fantastic. It reminded me of "Rent" with really good music
Written on Apr 20 2012American Idiot is a true "rock musical" in that the show was worthy of both song and spectacle. Not only was the band up to original Green Day album musical standards but many of the performers were instrumentalists as well. They also excelled at the tough physical precise choreographic demands of the production. This included dance, gymnastics and during one number a breathtaking aerial display. The book stayed true to Billy Joe's lyrics while bringing a greater understanding and coherence to his band's original “concept” album.
The single staged set, adorned mostly with suburban junk to accentuate the downtrodden atmosphere of the era, was used expertly to symbolize exterior movement. This, in addition to video monitors combined with windows and doors against the back stage wall and a creative use of lighting, gave the illusion of movement (and a platform for physical humor) to the whole show.
The production overall, was a total and genuine musical theatrical experience. And without giving the much deserved encore away, it brought the kind of surprise many in the audience could sing along to.
Written on Apr 20 2012great talent on stage, interesting staging and choreography. The sound was so loud for the instruments that I could not make sense of the lyrics except for a few acoustic songs.
Written on Apr 20 2012I'm a huge Green Day fan and I loved this album, so in that respect - this was a great show!
The performances were good - but the story line was fragmented and I really didn't understand the need for the choreography / dancing.
Overall, very entertaining!
Written on Apr 20 2012This is a rock musical which was very entertainining -especially
for fans of GREEN DAY...But very theatrically well done even if you
don't know GD at all.
Written on Apr 20 2012Powerful from start to Ovation!!!!!!!!
Written on Apr 20 2012The music was loud, but I found the whole thing very moving. The only improvement would have been subtitles as it was difficult to discern the words in the songs. The cast was excellent - oh to have that energy again!
Written on Apr 19 2012The show was ok. The music towards the beginning of the show sounded like they needed to crank up the volume. I also was surprised since I thought the voices of the actors needed to be a little better. At certain acts of the performance, I was surprised that there were so few people on stage, I thought it would be a bigger production. Also, the show did not have a cohesive story line to it. In the end, it was entertaining but nothing to write home about. I'm sure that they show is much better in NY, especially when the lead singer actually participates.
Written on Apr 18 2012I thought it was well done and really enjoyed it.
Written on Apr 18 2012overall good play if you like Green Day music, if not don't go. Actors were talented and no dull moment in the play. not necessarily good for younger kids - lots of cussing, drug use and sexual simulation.
Written on Apr 18 2012Real high energy show, great music. Be forewarned that the story is a little depressing.
Written on Apr 18 2012Great show, good music
Written on Apr 16 2012I'd been waiting for this show to come to LA and I'm so glad I had the opportunity to see it. I loved it. Loved the music, loved the actors. The musical/plot is somewhat open for interpretation but very very entertaining throughout. Nicely choreographed and loved the stage setting in general. I would totally go see it again!! It was my 1st time at the Ahmanson which is a pretty small theatre so any seat has a decent view.
Written on Apr 16 2012Amazing! We enjoyed the production and especially appreciated the handicap seats...awesome! Thank you! Now, we need Billy Elliott and War Horse!
Written on Apr 16 2012This was the second time I've seen AI in 7 days 'cause I liked it so much the first time (my seat was crummier this time, though; in the mezzanine). Again, the ensemble delivered. The three female leads have kick-ass voices, and the three male leads were pretty believable as buddies, not just singer-actors who got hired for this gig. Van Hughes is a super, but irritating, Johnny, with his dopey demeanor and laugh. His portrayal reminds me of some of the high school students I teach. Hope this is the same cast for Costa Mesa shows.
Written on Apr 16 2012The music was good, lots of great vocals. Storyline a bit flat.
Written on Apr 16 2012As a Green Day fan, I appreciated the energy of the show. Band was great, singing was great, and the show had very good pace. If it was going to be around a bit longer, wouldn't mind seeing it again.
Written on Apr 16 2012You mean Glee Day? I'm not a fan of musicals. I attened as to accompany my 13 year old daugher, who is a huge Green Day fan. She enjoyed it very much and that is all that matter's to this Daddy!
Written on Apr 16 2012Loved the music. Singing voices were excellent.
Written on Apr 16 2012I was a great show and the cast was awesome.
Written on Apr 16 2012The 50 year olds in the family who attended earlier liked it and related to the experience of raising teenagers. The 27 year olds who attended who had been through teen rebellions hated it. The music industry members of the family thought the singing and dancing were weak, and the production was lackluster which was not true on a Sat night but might have been on Sunday.
Overall, promising musical with production issues.
Written on Apr 16 2012We enjoyed the show. Ticket pu was easy, and seats were pretty good.
Written on Apr 16 2012The show is as good as you've heard. Excellent staging, great cast (with the voices needed to make the music come alive), and skilled band. A new dimension in musical theater!
Written on Apr 16 2012Fantastic Show
Written on Apr 16 2012High energy show with good staging.Limited emotional impact of the story because it was hard to engage with the lead characters.
Written on Apr 12 2012Actually left before play ended. Wasn't very good. No story, no real characters. Basically just Green Day songs strung together with little in-between. I don't recommend.
Written on Apr 10 2012I'm in total agreement with one of the other reviews I read...I know Green Day, but I don't worship at the Church of Billy Joe; I was completely lost not knowing the lyrics, and the head banging was so frequent that I couldn't understand a single lyric. I'm sure if I knew the songs and/or lyrics I would have been able to follow along a little better...but as it was, it felt like a performing arts high school putting together their senior project. I was just...disappointed. By shoot, Craig Manning from Degrassi was in it? YES.
Written on Apr 10 2012Great acting (so few words to work with). Such interesting and stimulating staging, what an exciting show to watch. Terrific band and dancers, too. One of my favorite shows ever!
Written on Apr 10 2012I love Green Day so it was great to hear their songs sung by some really talented performers . I appreciated each individual performance and the group choreography was really sharp and tight. However, the storyline was a bit of a mess, a little chaotic for my taste. It is about the life choices three male friends make during a period of a year or two. The musical depicts their struggles and frustrations of those choices. Lots of messages throughout the performance so need to pay attention. Overall, it was enjoyable but I am glad I did not pay full price. I would have been disappointed.
Written on Apr 10 2012Not a bad seat in the Ahmanson.
Great show, especially if you are a Green Day fan.
It was like attending a play & a concert wrapped into one.
Written on Apr 10 2012A really great way to end of Easter Day. My wife and I scored hugh points with our two teens. The performers were excellent. The next day my kids and I couldn't stop raving about the show. American Idiot truely "Rocked It".
Written on Apr 09 2012We had such a great time!! I love, love, love this show. Very entertaining but also holds a powerful message. The cast is great and would love to see the show a second time. Really enjoyed Scott J. Campbell's performance. Five stars!!
Written on Apr 09 2012Interesting concept, good choreography, and weak story. It reminded me a bit of Pink Floyd's "The Wall" in that the show is a bit like a long music video with a weak story thread that ties all the musical numbers together. Still enjoyable, especially if you like the music of Greenday, but I found my interest waivering towards the end.
Written on Apr 09 2012This show was GREAT!!! Best show I've been to in quite awhile!!! Throughly enjoyable and excellent seats.
Written on Apr 09 2012The performance was extremely High Energy.. Excellent Cast and Story line... Kept us Rockin!
Written on Apr 09 2012Very enjoyable. Great singing and dancing. The music is Green Day so it was top shelf!
Written on Apr 09 2012If you're a Green Day fan you will love this show... if not, you might still find yourself enjoying this fast paced One-Act Jukebox musical. The story line is about as thin as they get but, the cast's amazing talent alone make this show worth the ticket price. Great voices, choreography and a very good band add up to an enjoyable, if not particularly rememberable evening. Friday night audience gave the cast a standing O... well deserved. One caveat... it is "rock & roll" loud for about a third of the show.
Written on Apr 09 2012More like a concert with staging than a true musical, the show starts turned-up-to-eleven and doesn't let up until the finale, with a few surprisingly touching moments in between. If you're familiar with the songs and lyrics of the brilliant concept album, you'll fare much better with the story; if you only know the hits, you'll still have a good time, even if you can't decipher the pointed nihilism of the narrative. It begins with "f*ck the world" and ends with "f*ck the world, but I still have my friends" -- befitting the "rage and love" of Green Day's energetic songwriting with a cast that sings and dances their head-banging butts off. A fun night.
Written on Apr 09 2012It was fun and something different. While I am a Green Day Fan apparently I am not as familiar with the album American Idiot and perhaps would have understood it more if I was more familiar with the whole Album. However, the performances were spot on and the leads could sing and dance and had incredible bodies very in shape....
Written on Apr 07 2012I loved this musical! This made me want to get out my chair and rock out. It was a nonstop, fun, energetic good time. This was like a newer version of "Rent". I would definetly reccommend seeing this musical!! However fair warning the content in this musical is grown up and not for kids. Definetly PG13.
Written on Apr 06 2012The show was wonderful and the cast did an amazing job. If you love the music of Green Day you will not want to miss this show. I wouldn't take a young child due to the adult themes of the show but if I could I would go see this show again in a heartbeat.
Written on Apr 06 2012As to be expected of a rock musical the music was much too loud. The lyrics when sung by the group were unintelligible. Probably there should have been some warning to parents that there was some adult material in it and R-rated language. Loved the stage setting and the theatrics.
Written on Apr 06 2012This wasn't one of my favorite shows. Although the actors were wonderful, I had a hard time finding any empathy for the characters and their struggles. I feel like the story could've been fleshed out better. Of course our Goldstar seats were on the balcony to the far left and a good portion of the stage was obstructed, so maybe we just missed something. The chance you take for discounted tickets.
Written on Apr 06 2012I have a great idea. Let's take "Hair" and re-skin it using songs from Green Day. We don't have to change the plot or the staging, except maybe let's put a bunch of TVs on stage. Global search and replace the script references to Vietnam with Iraq and Afghanistan. Don't bother researching what the post-punk scene in the East Bay was actually like in the early 90's -- people will never remember!
A big silly poseur fest, without an ounce of real feeling anywhere except in the score. Saved from one star by Green Day's music.
Written on Apr 06 2012If you're a Green Day fan then it's fun but rambling. Story difficult to follow and the sound was not very good in the Mezzanine. Just OK.
Written on Apr 06 2012Am I the only one who thought the band Green Day was in the play? They were actors, but talented and entertaining. No time to get bored, it lasted 90 minutes without an intermission. I attended with my 23 year old daughter who was able to point out a lot of interesting trivia and things in the show that would have otherwise gone unnoticed.
Written on Apr 06 2012This was a fun show. My kids and I agree that we wish there was more dialogue. They found it difficult to to follow the story at times. That being said - great music, great cast!
Written on Apr 06 2012It was entertaining, but I expected more of a story than a concert. Great performance, l loved the closing song.
Written on Apr 06 2012Amazing seats and awesome show.
Written on Apr 06 2012Amazing Event Must See
Written on Apr 06 2012Show was excellent - no problems all around.
Written on Apr 05 2012Great Live music, super talented singers, The Dancing was not real creative and somewhat repetitive at times. The storyline was a bit hard to follow but the music talent made up for it ..
Written on Apr 05 2012Musical based on Green Day's hit album "American Idiot". All singing, rocking out and flashing lights! But where was the dialogue? Hardly any dialogue to describe what's going on during the show. If you are a fan of Green Day, you would probably understand the concept of the show. If you never heard of a Green Day song, then you will be lost like I was.
Written on Apr 05 2012amazing show! One of the best musicals that I have ever seen. when i bought the tickets, they didn't tell us where our seats were so i was worried that we would end up having aisle seats either to the far left or right of the stage. We ended up being right smack in the middle of our aisle and had an excellent view of the stage. thanks Goldstar!
Written on Apr 05 2012So very worth your time and money. the show is inspiring, the cast is perfect and the dancing is great -- the choreography was spot on. And the songs -- well you loved the songs on the radio and you are so going to love them in the show. run out and see this show now!!!
Written on Apr 05 2012First, I am not an avid or frequent theater patron. I have seen around 10-15 shows however, and this one was fantastic. Fantastic, in the sense that it was well done, the music was good, and the performances were inspiring. Those on here who complained of a lack of storyline were wrong. The story was very thoughtful and at least for me (I'm a guy), it definitely hit home a bit. Very thought provoking and nicely put together.

Written on Apr 05 2012Enjoyed the performance. The energy was awesome. Someimes hard to hear all the lyrics in the Mezzanine section, but thoroughly enjoyed the musical.
Written on Apr 05 2012a great, funny, and witty musical taking place in the near past of three good friends, who go their separate ways to find themselves, and each other. impressive voices of all singers/actors. Each brought out the character nicely. Without a doubt a must see.
Written on Apr 04 2012The music and choreography were excellent. The story was thought provoking. It was overall a very enjoyable, well done production. The only issue I had was that the volume of the music was too loud for me.
Written on Apr 04 2012Felt like a bunch of music videos strung together. There's almost no dialogue. I'm not a huge Green Day fan, but I like the music enough. The dancing is not impressive. Glad I paid half price because those mezzanine seats aren't great. I must be getting old, because I kinda just felt like saying to the main character "Stop whining and get a job!"
Written on Apr 04 2012If you liked Rock of Ages you'll like American Idiot. More of a rock concert with a mix of performance art instead of a true musical. It's fun if you like Green Days music.
Written on Apr 04 2012Really fun show! Amazing scenic design and use of video and projections. Dynamic and relevant choreography. Fantastic songs (but we knew that...) and inventive direction. Somewhat reminiscent of Rent and Across the Universe.
Written on Apr 04 2012It was fabulous! Thanks for the discounted tickets!
Written on Apr 04 2012A great musical - felt more like a concert but with as little acting bits as there were, the cast was definitely able to create a storyline. Really enjoyed this one.
Written on Apr 04 2012Passionate, Raw, Artistic, Fabulous!
Written on Apr 04 2012Great seats, no problem picking up tickets. My husband and I took our 2 teenagers (15 & 17). If you like Green Day than you will really enjoy. Lots of "f-bombs". If you are prone to migraines take an exedrine because there are lots of strobe lights. Overall, awesome :)
Written on Apr 03 2012Good concept but no character development and almost 0 dialogue. It was hard to care about the characters. Talented cast and good staging.
Written on Apr 03 2012Great, Great, Great.
Loved the music, the dance, the stage.
90 minutes of I can't stop moving.
Written on Apr 03 2012I really enjoyed it. The only comment is that the musical felt more like a concert than a musical.
Written on Apr 02 2012Loved it. Great energy. Fantastic music. Story was secondary. Really didn't matter. You get the gist of it. Youth. Disappointment. Drinking. Drugs. Sex. Swearing. Music is the savior. I had the time of my life!
Written on Apr 02 2012It was a fun show. I love Green Day and the story was pretty easy to follow. The acting was believable and performances alive. Glad I went, especially at half price. :)

Description
Slinging razor guitars, thundering drums and an anti-hero named Johnny. Not the prelude of typical entries in the canon of musical theater. But these elements herald a groundbreaking American musical all the same: with the burning passion of characters who yearn for something more, songs bursting with emotion and a story that dares you to feel and celebrate and hope.
The music of Green Day and the lyrics of lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong captured the zeitgeist of a generation with its Grammy® Award-winning multi-platinum album. American Idiot puts those raw emotions front and center in a highly theatrical and thoroughly satisfying rock opera that burns up the stage.
Monster hits like “Boulevard of Broken Dreams,” “21 Guns,” “Wake Me Up When September Ends,” “Holiday” and the title track soar like they were written for the stage under the direction of Tony Award® winner Michael Mayer (Spring Awakening), choreography by Olivier Award winner Steven Hoggett (Black Watch) and music supervision, orchestrations and arrangements by Pulitzer Prize winner Tom Kitt (Next to Normal).
