Actress, dancer and choreographer Debbie Allen's fun, fresh spin on The Nutcracker returns to Royce Hall for the holidays. The Hot Chocolate Nutcracker gives the seasonal favorite a rich new cultural context and updated characters, and features a lively contemporary score with original songs from multiple-Grammy-winner Mariah Carey and others. After young Kara receives a nutcracker filled with hot chocolate, she falls asleep and journeys to enchanted lands, including Candy Cane Lane, Egypt, the Rainforest, Jazzland, Russia and the Land of the Kimono Dolls. Little ones will have no trouble following along thanks to the narration by three wisecracking mice: Harvey, Schmink and Buckey. Allen herself appears in this fun holiday musical adventure. Great seats (even if we were on the rear balcony section). Easy to get our tickets at will-call. Staffing was helpful and friendly. The show was amazing! It felt more like a gathering of friends and a "movie" class that I took in college (which I love!!). Love the flow of the performances and the MC's of the night (Sandra Oh and Eric Dane --> just wished they sang even a note though) but they provided comedic relief and entertainment. Very intimate feel as the performers were very engaging with the audience throughout the night. The Grey's Anatomy cast and the band were amazing. Sara Ramirez can have her own singing career and be a rock star if she really wanted to pursue that avenue. Justin Chambers (and kids), Owen McKidd, Chandra Wilson can rock it!! Kim Raver, Jessica Capshaw, Sarah Drew and James Pickens, Jr., also did great! Watching the VIP's was just as entertaining as watching the performers! Guest appearance from Ingrid Michaelson and hearing her experience was a treat! Truly enjoyed myself and for a good cause too! If they performed again, I would go see it. On a side note: for Grey's Anatomy/Actors Fund --> I'd suggest selling CD's or songs on i-tunes to raise more money. Wish there were magnets, CD's, t-shirts, etc. to purchase (if there were, sorry I missed it as I didn't see anything at the end of the show) but maybe something to think about for raising money for the fund. I'm sure a lot of people would've bought something (me included). Thanks for a fun, entertaining night and rock star performances!!
On Sunday evening March 18th at Royce Hall on the UCLA campus, the cast of ABC's hit drama Grey's Anatomy will gather to perform Grey's Anatomy: The Songs Beneath the Show, a live musical celebration to benefit The Actors Fund. Come see the cast perform selected songs from last season's Musical Event, as well as additional music from the Grey's Anatomy songbook. This evening of song and story will examine the way music has always been an integral part of the storytelling on Grey's, and will provide fans with a rare behind the scenes glimpse at how the show is put together.
