A tragicomic historical fantasy play, Hunger: In Bed With Roy Cohn imagines the infamous American attorney -- who played a prominent role in both the Rosenberg trial and the anti-communist McCarthy hearings -- on his death bed. There, in a sort of purgatory of the mind, Cohn must contend with visions of people from his past, and ponder a life that might have been (mostly thanks to his dancing inner child, who urges him to finally "come out"). Jules Aaron directs the play, which was written by Joan Beber and features choreography by Kay Cole and original music by Max Kinberg.

In the summer of 1969 as Neil Armstrong made his historic walk on the Moon, the world seemed open to endless possibilities, and three teen-aged friends from L.A.'s Westside set out on a six-week tour to see America. Now, 25 years later, in a very changed world, Paul Lewin tries to figure out how his relationship with his former best friend faded over the years. Guided by memories and music from his past, Paul begins a new sort of journey in this world premiere play by Richard Martin Hirsch. Learn More

This was touted as a vaudeville show version. It was dull. At intermission, my husband said, "I'm not finding this terrible, just bland, but I'll stay if you want to." I felt the same, so we left. Several performances were excellent, but a couple--Barbara Walters, Ronald Reagan, and even Cohn himself--seemed flat. This may have been the way the director wanted it, but we were bored. On the UP SIDE, the technical aspects--sets, costumes and especially lighting and sound, were excellent. As usual, this theatre did beautiful work on the tech side. We will continue to go there.

I felt sorry for the actors - the script is an "Angels in America" wannabe and doesn't work on any level.

The play is very cleverly written - and well acted and performed - which included singing and dancing. Good choreography too.
Advice: read the program info before the play begins - it helps to explain how the play is organized - and it clarifies who the young man represents, which otherwise is not obvious.

I enjoyd the 2nd half of the show more than the first. Possibly because the heat was up too high and I fell asleep.
