A contemporary, musicalized spin on Oscar Wilde's classic comedy, The Canterville Ghost, Doug Haverty and Adryan Russ's iGhost is the story of a young artist who uses Bluetooth wireless wizardry within a haunted castle with bombastic, humorous, and surprisingly romantic results. Haverty and Russ's previous project was the award-winning off-Broadway musical about group therapy, Inside Out.

The Lyric Theatre presents Aftershocks, by Doug Haverty. Two housewives escape from their dreary lives in Ohio and are having the time of their lives working as extras in the movies while living in a Valencia, California trailer park. All is fantastic -- until someone's long-buried past shows up on their aluminum doorstep. Then everyone's carefully constructed fantasies begin to crumble like buildings in an earthquake. JC Gafford directs this newly revised version of Haverty's 1989 play, which is both heartfelt and upbeat. Learn More

This is an uneven production. It's a good idea for a musical, the Duke (understudy), the Ghost, and Virginia had great singing voices, and the comedic musical numbers were fun. However, the set is too small to depict the grandeur of the castle (or to wedge the whole chorus on stage), other soloists gave too many sour notes, and the more serious songs were simply unconvincing... unless delivered by leading lady Rebecca Johnson.

And that's the ray of sunshine that shifts this review from a 3 to a 4. Miss Johnson has such charisma and portrays Virginia with such joy, radiance, wisdom, and playfulness... Made me wish _I_ was a duke with a chiseled jaw and haunted castle. (Sigh.)

I LIKE the score, mainly. I truly believe that there is a really good show here....but it needs more of an "airborne" director. Did not like the direction...or the visual concept at all. Good the Lyric Theatre got this show running....

This play was very good. My wife and I had a good time. I would get there early to get the best seats and find parking.
